As I posted in another thread, I will bet heavily that online gambling (government-controlled) will eventually, after a few years, return to the U.S. So if you depend on poker to live you just need to walk the earth and have adventures for a little bit until the U.S. poker situation sorts out.

as a brazilian i would suggest to not moving to brazil UNLESS you know someone who can help you to indicate where to live and what is safe to do...

if u know someone who can help u, u will probally have one really good life...

I guess you're right. But I thought security had improved in the last few years, even if of course the drugs and all that it's associated with them is still a factor.

I'm portuguese btw. The problem with moving to Portugal or Spain from abroad is that you have to mount a business, have a job guaranteed, or be a college student registered in a local university. If not you will get the 90 day tourist limit if you're from outside the EU, that's almost certain.

I'm an aerospace engineer and don't make my primary income from poker. Moving to Canada might be feasible for me since I can probably find an aerospace engineering job there. Time to update my resume...

Maybe we could just all play on other sites that haven't actually done any of the things that the big ones are accused of, other than allowing us players?

Is noone considering playing under the IDs of people from other countries, and using a cheap VPN to connect with a non-US IP? Should be the easiest way for you guys. And you can pay those ppl very little to use their scanned documents etc.

Um.... any site that allows US players has to do those kinds of things to get the money to and from American players.

It's not like FTP, PS, etc. were doing it for fun.

I checked out the possibility out about a year ago. Assuming nothing has changed, you can't do it online. You have to be physically in Canada to pen it. Make a few phone calls.

Alright all you world travelers......give it to us....example Canada is freezing but they're as close to American as you get. Thailand is cheap as hell but you'll probably be seeing things like 12 year old hookers on the street that will make your skin crawl. Australia, beautiful place with water everywhere but expensive as hell.....etc... give us the truth because I have no idea!!!

I thought this as well, but British columbia (vancuver, or victoria) have pretty great weather it looks like (warmer winters than any east coast city). Apparently there is some ocean current (japan something or other) that gives them much warmer weather than the rest of canada.

vancuver is also basically a border town, so its not like you are super removed from the US should you decide you wanna visit or get booted after 6 months or whatever.

You know of alot of casinos in Iran,Iraq, and Afghanistan do you? Can you tell us exactly where? I doubt it. Islamic law frowns on gambling in a big way.

If you're American and you think about moving anywhere...move to Canada. It's closeby, easy access to/from the USA, your standard of living is virtually identical except we have cheaper and better healthcare.

Just for god's sake if you have any Canadian friends, convince them not to vote for Harper...simply because him and his cronies have the same kinda right-wing evangelical slant that alot of Republicans in the States...ones which got the UIGEA passed in the first place.

Anyone looking to move to Australia, I own a house in Hobart, Tasmania with a spare room. My housemate and I are parttime grinders when we're not working our day jobs and are looking to take poker more seriously. Would be happy to offer free rent in exchange for some kind of coaching/staking deal. PM me if interested!

I left the US for Canada in 1969, living (eight years in the North before moving to Toronto) at first as a landed immigrant and then as a Canadian citizen. I've never had occasion to regret my decision. And while I do dislike the current Conservative government (I would disagree with the poster who generally associated their views with the Tea Party, but they do have some socially repressive views that are similar), I find Canada a kinder, more tolerant nation than the States. On the one hand, the old stereotype that it is harder to strike up casual friendships in Canada than in the more outgoing US probably remains true, at least to some degree, but on the other hand, the tolerance and welcoming attitude toward immigrants and the relative freedom from racism and homophobia is striking and the lower levels of violent crime and gun use is astonishing. And, as suggested above, the social network, including healthcare, is better, meaning your tax dollar shows more actual returns.

Regarding the view that Canada follows the US in legislation: it has tended to look over its shoulder at the country to its south in regards to drug legislation and the like, but is doing so much less these days. (E.g., despite the Harper Federal gov't, marijuana is pretty close to legal.) The idea that Canada will follow the US in its pursuit of online poker strikes me as farfetched. Again I'd say that despite the current federal government, Canada continues to be a place guided by the principle of tolerance, in this as in other things.

As another poster noted, Vancouver is number 1 in The Economist's list of "most liveable cities"; I'll add that Toronto is number 4, and Calgary is 5. I find Toronto an extraordinarily pleasant city (but be warned, the cost of housing is high). The climate is certainly no worse than that of many cities in the northern parts of the US. For live poker unfortunately, except for the month of August, it's either a drive of more than an hour (from downtown) or underground play--but the games in the legal casinos are usually loose to very loose, looser than than the California games in my experience. (I suppose if one wanted to play a lot of live poker, one could live close to Niagara.)

And there are no taxes on gambling wins. (The question can be a bit more complicated than that bald statement suggests--there's a long thread on this--but in practice that statement seems to me adequate to most situations.)

I'll leave it to others to advise about immigration rules, but I'm happy to welcome players to what I see as a very good place to live.

I see a ton of posts the last day or so about people fed up with the government and making plans to immediately move from the U.S.

So... Where are you going to move to? I want to hear this.
