Yes..? The main and best possible defense against the claim that it takes up time is that it does not.

Exactly! Wait, which rule do you mean.

People do ask for counts. But when they do they either get one voluntarily from the player, or they are satisfied with an estimate from the player, or they are satisfied when I ask the player to lift their hands and make the chips visible.

So on the rare occasion that the player feels they need an exact count, and the opponent doesn't want to provide one is the limiting time we are talking about.

From what I've seen I'd say to the player "how much do you have left?" and they either give you a count or just move their hands away from by their stack so you can count yourself

I don't see anything wrong with asking for a count, you have to know how many chips villains has left, and guessing and getting it wrong could be more harmful than just asking politely for a count.

I'm colorblind and have been burned by green 25s sitting on top of stacks of red. If someone's across the table from me I usually just ask if they have any big chips, but too many 1/2 pros refuse to say a word during a pot.

If you're not going to allow counts for some reason, you should at least require big chips to be physically in FRONT of other chips. Not beside or on top...

By the way, this is a sidetrack, but any "pro" who believes that if they say one word they might give off a tell is a complete idiot who has no idea why people win at poker.

We have these folks in limit games-- they try to assemble their chips to raise the turn in a kill pot in one motion (24 or 32 chips) without having to say the word "raise" because, you know, if you say "raise" you are giving off all sorts of information. It's completely silly.

If you fancy yourself a good player, you need to be able to at least say simple and necessary things during a poker hand.
