I wish to become more actively involved in the poker community and I'm looking for a place to start. Tips for both live and online are welcome. I asked in the beginner's section, but the thread got derailed with an argument about Donald Trump somehow.

To what end? What's the objective?

Did you expect differently from the Internet?

Like someone said, be normal. In live games, engage in conversations with people around you. Greet them by name. Say bye when they leave. When you bump into a good player away from the table, ask them a poker related question. Offer to take them out to lunch to discuss more.

What does this even mean? What is "actively involved with the poker community"? Are you talking about just becoming a poker player? Are you just looking to make friends? This is a really weird post unless English isn't the first language and you're looking to enter the industry for employment.

Poker culture is kind of a lame thing to fit in with

Dont do DB things like overuse 'clock' and asking to see players hands unless absolutely necessary. Do not hit and run. Do not hide information about an error made by dealer, even if it benefits you. Do not angle shoot, call out those that do. TIP. Be calm in all of your claims of errors. Know the rules. Make your actions obvious. Pay attention to the game. On and on and on, you get the idea.

Yes, we know you work in the industry.

One networking tip is to think about how you can help others, and after you've established a relationship consider what things you can request that someone else can easily do. For instance, if you play with someone a lot buy them a beer or bum them a smoke or think what other smallish thing they like and procure it for them. Do that a few times and establish some sort of rapport with them. Then ask for something you'd like that is easy for them ideally in a manner that flatters them and demonstrates why you value the relationship or their experience. For instance, "id like to pick your brain about a hand I played. I think I made a mistake and would like your advice." Try not to ask for things they can't deliver. For instance, someone you know and who likes you has access to an exclusive home game you want to play. Don't ask them for an invite of its not in their power to give you one. Asking people for something they can't give you makes them feel bad. Instead ask for an intro to the host. That's free for them and easily within their power.

Not to get in good with the dealers or floors, though it does help. I have seen verbal fights break out between tippers and non, a few resulting in removals from the room. The tippers crowd tends to be bigger, and more well respected within the 'poker society' OP wants to be a part of.

From the OP in the Beginner's section, it looks like maybe he's just trying to get "rep" to use in the Marketplace section of the forum. But even though OP has read the thread enough to know it devolved into a Trump discussion, he never answered any of the questions asked of him there (or in here), so who knows what he's really looking for.

+1 ReidL... motivation for this thread (and the SAME thread in BQ) is more than a little suspicious.

Online: Post thoughtful comments and questions in forums like 2+2 and others. Use the same handle so that people know who you are, across sites. Do this for years and years and years—without ****ing up and getting banned—until you reach a post count that seems impressive in each forum.

Even then, to most people you're still just a stranger with a big post count, but that'll buy you a bit of respect in some circles.

Live: Play poker for years and years and years. Always be polite or better toward your opponents and house staff, and bonus points if you're also witty or have some other social value. Very importantly, be a decent and honest player. Don't shoot angles, don't slowroll, and don't be a rules nit or argue about petty stuff. Don't pull anything that people will find objectionable.

Play in multiple cardrooms, if you can. You'll make face time with far more players, and other players who make the rounds at multiple rooms will start to recognize you. Of course, always be a decent guy, and don't be afraid to shake hands and exchange numbers if your goal is networking.

Also, attend home games, and better yet, host them if you can. If you want to accrue a lot of respect in a short time, bring a table or two of people together for a well-run and entertaining night of poker. You'd be amazed at how much poker players appreciate that.

Oddly enough, extra bonus points if people—correctly or not—come to see you as a consistent winner. All but a small subset of poker players (ornery old ladies, mostly) have great respect for winning players.

Oh.

Yeah, if you're wondering how to become trusted enough to use the Marketplace, you're not trusted enough to use the Marketplace.
