I think people who don't wear sunglasses indoors think people who do are generally idiots, whether they are playing cards or not.

I'm the typical losing player u talk about, played around 100 hrs last year and personally wearing sunglasses at the table would make me more comfortable but I'm in the group that thinks ppl who wear em inside are fools, so I don't. Weird huh?

So I guess I'm the fool

Live poker is a very social game. For many losing players, I think it is a key reason for playing. Sure, they enjoy playing cards, and they like the possibility that they may go home with more money in their pocket than they came in with. But, mostly they don't.

I suspect they don't mind too much as long as they enjoyed their evening out, and didn't lose more money than they can comfortably afford. But, a significant portion of that enjoyment for these losing players is engaging in a good conversation with other casual players they know, and meeting new people to socialize with.

When someone sits down at a table, tight-lipped and wearing sunglasses, never speaking, never smiling, sometimes never even acknowledging that they are surrounded by other human beings, it can put a damper on the conversation at the table, especially in their immediate area.

They don't look friendly. They don't act friendly. And if I am there just to have a good time, I probably don't want them sitting next to me. An empty chair has more charisma.

I suspect this is where a lot of the sunglass hate comes from.

I am still somewhat a novice at the B&M games but have been playing online for almost a decade as a consistent winner. In my most recent 16 hr session I wore sunglasses for the first time at the table for the entire time. I went into the day knowing that i was going to use them as part of my game plan at the table.

I got moved to the main table early on and immediately took on the role of the silent sunglasses dude stereotype. I don't know what it was but after about an hour people began to take notice of me and I pretty much ran the game. I don't know what it was but a couple of times people muttered about how they just didn't want me in the pot or how they cannot read me at all. Maybe wearing them hid a tell I had before or maybe it just gave me the confidence that just portrayed into poker face. That session ended up being one of my best live performances yet.

Thats my personal experience
The feeling that you got was the same one that my two year old gets when i put my hat infront of his face then quickly take it off and say peeka bo!
he thinks that noone can see him when the hat is there!

Maybe this is extreme and it is not to berate or antagonize you.

But the sunglasses made you less self-concious and more confident.

Now, seeing as you are a successfull online player, you already know what to do and when to succeed at a poker table.

Couple that with more confidence and boom! a winning session!

I mean can't you control your eyes bulging out of your head when you flop a monster?

I don't like it when someone next to me is wearing sunglasses then tries to start a conversation with me. If I can't see his eyes, it's very disrespectful.

Yesterday I got pulled over for doing 93mph. The first thing I did when the cop came up to me is I took off my sunglasses. And I got a ticket only for careless driving (a much less serious ticket and fine). I can assure you if I kept them on I would have gotten a full speeding ticket.

Take off the glasses, your not in the WSOP.

why don't you just look at them? I think I make people feel intimidated by watching them while they are making certain play especially if I'm in the hand with them. Your allowed to look at people at the table.
This is so not true. I work in darker conditions at my day job. I wear the glasses to protect eyesight and prevent me from getting headaches. I would prefer to not wear them but I have little choice to do so if I'm planning on putting in long sessions. One session I didn't have them with me at a 2/5 table and I went on a heater 4-5 hours into the session and I had to stop because the of headache.

More seriously, it's bright in there and it feels weird to stare at people while they are staring back at you :-p

So develop a tolerance for locking eyes with a heterosexual man, and then exploit your advantage.

If so, it's misguided. Anti-social players will be anti-social regardless of their eyewear, just like sometime Sunglasses Guy is the loudest at the table.

People wear sunglasses for many reasons. I do find it funny when people wear them because of TV or some image reason. The ones I wear I pick out carefully as to not be too dark as to not see everything, lightweight, and comfortable. I am still able to be social when I want to, or not.

One of my better skills at the game is reading people (and no, not looking into their eyes and reading their souls that is for Hollywood). If you are staring at someone they tend to act more. It's great to be facing the pot like you're looking at the flop as it hits the board and I am really looking at the villain's honest reaction.

For anyone who think tells are pointless at 1-2, 1-3 games please pull up a chair at my table. Watching that hand jerk toward their chips when that flop hits or a micro wince when that Ace pops on the turn is money saved and money taken.

As for the hiding, sure I do have that feeling at times, a feeling of striking at the angles which I do a lot.

Anyone who automatically assumes this or that because of sunglasses, race, age, sex, or clothing are the real suckers waiting to give their money away. So please assume that since I am semi-retired, where comfortable clothes, sunglasses and cracking jokes that I am some nit rec player who watches too much ESPN.

The eyes are actually the least expressive part of a person's total demeanor because, in poker, that's what players are most self aware of.

When you wear sunglasses, your opponents, unable to see your eyes, will naturally concentrate on everything else about you.

Everything else about you is where the tells are.

So, wear them.

Explain that to the sunglasses wearing guy who called my river bet the other night in a hand -- he said he called because he saw me blink on the river card -- so he knew I had nothing. Silly guy. The river had given me a straight flush. Oh nevermind, don't explain it to him, I liked him the way he was...

There is an old man I used to play with at the Venetian who told me, "You have a tell. I'm not going to tell you what it is, but you should know you have a tell."

I've made hundreds of dollars off of him.

Last night a girl sits down short-stacked at $1/2. When the action would get to her it would usually go like this

Dealer: "two to you"
Girl: ::throws out 2 red chips::
Dealer: "raise to 10"
girl: "no, I was just calling, I put out two chips like you said".

She flat called every bet to the river every hand until she lost her $50 (took like 4 hands -- she won a pot). She got up, came back, re-bought for another $50. Then she put on her way too dark sunglasses and took up a "poker pose". And proceeded to flat call off 2 more buy-ins, getting up each time to go get more money. Then she decided it must be us and not her, so she switched tables...

Yeah -- sunglasses are so uber cool.

Some of the stuff in this thread made me lol. Specifically about the 1/2 players at the main game muttering about how they couldn't read the guy "running the game" or whatever. I can picture it now, lol...

FWIW I frequently wear sunglasses at the table. They are always either on the top of my head or hanging from my shirt though, never on my face. I tried wearing them for like 3 hands once... couldn't stand it... found the reduced visibility extremely annoying.

I don't wear sunglasses but I die without a baseball cap. The bright overhead light in casinos wears on me. I need the cap to cut the light. The other day I forgot my hat and had to blow $20 in comps at the gift shop to get a new one.

That being the case, I can understand that some folks might like having sunglasses for reasons other than looking like a "pro."

I have to wear slightly tinted sunglasses because of an eye injury. The lights in the poker room cause me to have brutal headaches because the one bad eye is adversely affected by the light. They are only slightly tinted and don't actually prevent anyone from seeing my eyes. Over the years I have had a few players ask me why I wear them and are very understanding. I don't however wear a hoodie or ear phones.

I also had an eye injury years ago and wear sunglasses all the time wherever I go. Any bright light, flashing lights, or florescent light bothers me. Sunglasses help quiet the static. I have different tints depending on where I am. My poker room is dark enough to wear a light tint so I do. My eyes are clearly visible. If asked I'll explain why but usually someone says something with attitude and then I don't feel I need to explain it. If someone needs to comment on my appearance then they have issues.

Sunglasses help the player in the sense that the other players can't see what your looking at. I was in a $225 bounty tournament at a casino in Dubuque Iowa last year. I got KXs in the bb and i check. Flop comes out gets checked around. Turn gives me the flush draw so I fire 600 and get one caller. River misses me completely. I gaze up through the sunglasses and spot my opponent holding his cards in such a way that you could tell he was gonna toss them in the muck. He would not have done this if he knew I was looking at him but my head was down, but my eyes were looking upward and straight at him. I fired 1800 and his cards hit the muck before the chips hit the felt. If not for the sunglasses no way I take that pot down.

I wear heavy contact lenses and because I rubbed my eyes too much after taking them out the night before, they were very sensitive to light the next morning, even indoors. I almost walked up to the parking garage to get my sunglasses but I didn't, because I didn't wanna look like a fool.
