Ruling-new player last to act? Ruling-new player last to act?

Need a ruling.

Button is on seat 6, seat 7 is empty. As the current hand finishes NewGuy takes seat 7 and seat 8 is felted and leaves. Dealer moves the Button to seat 8 and announces “Dead button”. GrumpyOldMan in seat 9 thinks he should get the Button. Dealer explains the Dead button rule and gets ready to deal, GrumpyOldMan starts to argue, Dealer says “Button is right.” and starts passing out cards...

I admit limited experience and knowledge but this seems to be proper procedure. Correct?

… when NewGuy in seat 7 gets his 1st card GrumpyOldMan says “He can't play this hand because he would be last to act.”
“He's not on the button”.
Back and forth and Floor is called who declares, “Deal him in, he's not on the button”.

Correct ruling?

I've seen this situation twice before, and even after the new player offered to post, two different dealers explained that a player can't be last to act on their first hand at the table.

Could someone please cite book, chapter, and verse so I can educate myself or the floor as needed.

Thanks

Grumpy old man doesn't get to skip his sb. If I read this correctly, he was bb last hand and the sb was felted.

Button correct. Wether new guy gets a hand nay be room dependent, but nothing wrong with it (posting behind a dead button) in my eyes, the more important yhing is not skipping blinds.

Button is not correct. In a room with the dead button rule the button goes back to the 6 seat new player is between the button and the blind,

(I would note that in a tournament following TDA rules a player moving from a broken table can assume the button)

Agree with psand. To elaborate a bit...

A dead button should stay on seat 6, not move to seat 7 or 8. Though different rooms might instead move the button to one of those seats, doing so prevents the new player from entering immediately if he wants, as described below, so I prefer keeping the button in 6.

If the new player does not want to come in immediately, then whether it moves or stays is immaterial. Seat 9 is BB, there is no SB, and new player must wait. Next hand, another dead button, seat 9 is SB, seat 10/1 is BB, and new player waits another hand. Next hand seat 9 is button and new player comes in / posts if required. Short version: seat 9 is right, new player cannot come in and assume the button position, regardless of where the actual button disk is placed, and regardless of whether or not he posts or is required to post. He must wait until a previously active player has the button to come in.

If new player does want to come in immediately... as mentioned above, I prefer the dead button stays in seat 6, then the new player can enter in either seat 7 or 8, and come in as the BB, with no SB. Next hand, another dead button in seat 6, new player is now SB, and seat 9 is BB. Next hand, new player is button.

ETA: I may have misunderstood what happened the previous hand. If seat 9 was just the BB, then instead the button stays in seat 6, and new player can come in by buying the button in seat 7 or 8. If he prefers to wait, then he must wait one hand, and come in (and post if needed) next hand, when seat 9 has the button. As above, though, he cannot come into the game in the button position, regardless of where the actual button disk is placed, he must wait until an active player has the button.

the new player needs to wait a hand since the guy who just posted the BB would have to now post the SB and the button stays where it is. If the new guy wants to buy the button, he can post both blinds, and the guy who was the previous BB would get a free hand and then post the SB on the next hand, with the new player now on the button.

It makes things easier if the button always stays in front of a player who was dealt into the previous hand. At least in rooms that use a dead button. In this case that would put the button in seat 6 and it's clear that the new player is coming in between the B and SB and can either buy the button or wait one.

In a moving button room seat 9 gets the button but has to post an SB on the button. Sorry mister grumpy no way to avoid paying your blinds.

This is correct.

This was a cash game.

GrumpyOldMan in seat 9 was BB in 1st hand and busted guy in seat 8 was SB.

Second hand as played NewGuy in seat 7, empty seat 8 has the Button, GrumpyOldMan in seat 9 was SB and seat 10 was BB

As mentioned above by most, that should not be allowed in most rulesets.

Lol at dealer moving the button and explaining it by saying "dead button".

Button freezes in seat 6 for a cash game, moves to seat 8 for tournaments (assuming seat 8 was the small blind on the hand he got knocked out). New player gets a hand in the tournament but has to buy the button if he wants to play in the cash scenario.

I have been complaining of this for years. At somepoint people started saying dead buttn for button in empty seat as opposed to the button is dead (it has stopped moving).

And related tp this is the announcement of a dead small blnd when the player who would post the SB leaves. There is no SB ... it is not dead.

But it feels like i'm tilting at windmills on this one.
