24yo male. Italy. Majoring in CS. No jobs. Boredness ensues.

Moves to the US to do something with his life. Maintains himself playing live poker, while trying to get software dev gigs on the side. Also developing an online business & dreaming for it to succeed so that he can stop playing poker and dedicate his life to something useful instead.

What are the chances he doesn’t starve to death considering he’ll start the trip with 4800$ in his pocket and where should he move to make the best out of his first days, where poker & maybe online poker too will be his only sources of income?

It’s totally a movie.
But maybe not.

Good to know. Are Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami are all the same?

I'm not sure. I think they are all good but I don't know if some are significantly better than others. Hopefully someone else chimes in that knows more

I hope you are aware that you can't just jump on a plane to the US to stay there for good and work? Unless you won the green card lottery or have a business sponsor.

Focus on the software gigs on the side and don't play poker when your whole life bankroll is only $4800. One cooler and you risk being homeless in a foreign country. Do the side jobs, parlay it into a full time job, and then play some poker for fun. Also, as stated, it's not really legal to just up and leave on a whim and move here without going through the whole process.

Is this basically a vacation or a long-term thing?

No poker in Italy? Can do the software thing anywhere, make apps in your garage.

yeah, no reason to make it all the way here to get into the poker world/developer... with a short br... illegaly in some way...
Just stay there and do the side jobs, deposit some online if you want to play and test the waters, but dont put all your eggs on a poker carreer please

From what you hear? You think they are all good? Wow, great input, I think. LOL, at least act like you may have a clue what you are talking about. Just kidding, always good to see all the comments.

Yes, when every single person that I have talked to that has played there says it's the best game in the country I start believing it after a while. I made it known I hadn't personally played there.

After our hero moves to California (best poker and computer mix) he realizes he barely has enough money to get a place to live and decides to work at Taco Bell. A few years goes by, and after grinding out low stakes poker on the side he finally has enough to take a vacation before finally landing a job with Commodore. He meets a beautiful blond beach chic whom he marries. She divorces him because he wont stop being a dgen at poker and takes all of his money. He moves back to Italy to drive Knishs truck. The end.......or is it?

I'm not sure about this either, but geographically speaking Orlando should be the most central location of those cities. So it might be the right spot to stay if you're going to be living there for a while and end up playing at all those locations with any frequency. Florida is a large state, especially north to south, so there's a lot of traveling distance between the cities. If you choose Miami or Jacksonville, you'll probably be less likely to play in the furthest cities because you could end up eating up the better part of a day just driving to and from.

Somewhere between Fort Lauderdale and Miami would be my choice... good mix of snow birds, tourists, retirees, and a bunch of room options.

Try to have multiple revenue streams so do your online stuff as well...

Avoid Orlando like the plague for poker...there's no room within an hour and a half from there.

If you're in south Florida near ft lauderdale you will have 3-4 options within 20 minutes with additional options 30-40 mins away.

Tampa area has lots of easy poker, is the best Florida metro area BY FAR, and is the cheapest and easiest to get in and out of (most of the time). Forget going to play around the state, not worth the drives, stay in one area, get to know the fish.

Our hero needs to bring more money however. Even here in Detroit $4800 doesnt go very far....again, barely enough to get a place to stay and eat for 3 months.

Hero wouldn't do that illegally. Italy is part of the Visa Waiver program, so once the ETSA is filled in, he gets 3 months of stay.

He wouldn't stay illegally because moving to the States has been his long term goal for a while and would never risk being expelled from that country. He'd probably stay 3 months, then come be to Italy for like 1 month, and if the experience was good, repeat another 3 months. After that, he'll re'evaluate based on later streets.

There isn't much to re-evaluate after that, they won't let you in for a third time in a year if you've already had two 3 month stays. Even the second 3 month stay under the visa waiver program is not a given.

If we're talking a 3 month stay there's no need to pick one city. Stay in South Florida for a week or two at an Airbnb, a week in Tampa, a week in Jax, hop over to Biloxi, New Orleans, then decide where to settle in. Temporary accommodations are very easy to come by these days and will be fully furnished.
