My question is, How disgusting is it for all these guys to keep giving Tom credit when they know he is a serial bluffer?
Also, you're talking from a standpoint outside of the game that is going on. Heads up has a lot to do with psychology, you're thinking from the perspective of just playing your cards and pot odds. Sure, if the opponent employed your proposed simple strategy (which he knows), he would have done much better in that hand; but Durr would never pull a move like that on you or someone playing that strategy. He would never need to, he'd run you over nice and slowly without any drama. Often it takes a good player to be made to look like the biggest fool. These guys are dancing with each other and Tom is the best at it, your strategy is just following a set dance pattern and not engaging at all. That's the lowest level of skill.
