While I don't like naked aces, I'm 90% sure if I call the action will call around to the BB, who will raise the pot, allowing me to isolate and get him all-in with his four random cards for a decent advantage. If I lose, no biggie.

I call, 7(!?) other people call, he bets the pot. I re-pot to 350+, nearly his stack. Everyone folds. He says, "I know you have Aces, but this isn't hold 'em and those suck in this game" and goes all-in. I call. He shows QJ42, with a suited J. Aces hold up, which completely shocks the BB. He rebuys for the minimum, tightens up some, and bitches at me for how badly I 'overplayed' my aces, explaining to me about how "aces are no good in omaha" and letting me know that I just got lucky that time, but really need to 'learn the game' and not treat it like hold 'em.

Yeah, I love live poker...

Ah, you can't blame him. He had two straight draws and a flush draw pre-flop.

1/2nl @ borgata,
the button (a total old nit) re raises to about 40 or 50 pre. The UTG raiser says" must be aces" then the UTG bets the flop, turn and river (putting the old nit all in). The Button shows AA and the stupid donk mucks his QQ. He then berates the button, saying that he never bet his aces! He actually said "How did he know I was going to bet? We reminded him that because the old guy was on teh button, he KNEW the UTG donk was betting. (UTG donk was stunned).

I talk a lot of nonsense at the table. I have said the following (that I remember):

"I only play A2 if they're both DIAMONDS, because that's the best suit."
"I hate it when people straddle."
"I'm more likely to play a suited 1 gapper as opposed to suited connectors. You're more likely to get paid off if you hit your straight, because its disguised."

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

1/2 NLHE game at my local casino..one of the loosest regular players in the game folded his hand in position to a standard pre-flop raise. There were two players in the hand and the final board read Q7J7J. The origional raiser had QQ, the caller had JJ, and the guy who folded freaks out and digs in the muck pulling out the 77 he folded. If he had called, he would have lost the pot (approximatly $600), but hit the bad beat jackpot of several 10s of thousands. Everyone at the table asked him why he folded the 77 to a standard pre-flop raise, and he simply said that he put the initial raiser on a big hand.
Later in the session he called a raise and a re-raise totalling $40 (obviously alot for a 1/2 blind game) with 10-4 out of position. When I asked him why he would call with the 10-4 and not the 77 he told me it was because with the 10-4 he had 9 outs to hit and with the 77 he only had 2.

In a PL holdem tourney, got heads up with a calling station, bet every chance i got and he kept calling, so I push on the river. He tanks, then finally folds and berates me for overbetting the pot (in PL) and that it was an obvious bluff

This thread is hilarious. i wish i had something to contribute.

this and the "funniest/craziest thing you've seen at a poker table" are the best threads i've seen, i like the ones that are full of different people's small stories.

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

was just playing 3/5 nl live the other night.
i flopped 5s full of Qs on a Q55 board from the BB. i checked in a multi way pot, the UTG limper bet and i called. i check raised him on the turn and he called. the pot was now about $175 and he had about $50 left in his stack. the river was the case 5 giving me quads.

i bet all in. he folded while saying....."i have a Queen, but I think you have a better kicker." on a Q5585 board. needing to call $50 for $225 with a full house.

It's not the 0.000001% equity that concerns me, it's the overall vibe. Not really your situation specifically, but in general. Far more often than not, when someone tries to argue with someone who is misinformed, it's a mood-killer.
Yeah I know the situation that you are talking about. Alot of times some one will lose a big pot when some one outdraws them on the river or something then they blow their top and ask why the guy called him not getting the proper odds... etc etc. Yeah I never do anything like that. I obviously know that I'm not going to make money if people don't make mistakes and occassionaly players are going to make mistakes yet still win the hand, that's part of the game. In the long run though you wan't them making those bad calls on draws with 1 card to come. Trust me I'm probably one of the quietest guys at the table. I don't say much at all let alone grilling people about their bad plays and making them feel uncomfortable.

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

I read in another thread about absurd things heard while playing poker live.

One of them was about the hand T5

I was saying (very seriously) to the table how T5 is the best hand in hold'em as Any straight that is made is made using either a Ten or a Five.

Someone told me that I'd have to see all the cards to make a straight usually and I said in reply "Well if you don't see all the cards how can you win?"

Again I'm completely bull****ting them with a straight face.

I went to the bathroom a little while later and I heard from my friend at the table (later on that night) that the whole table thought I was a terrible player because my fav. hand was T5.

I also raised with 27c and then ended up winning a 4 way pot after making a flush. Someone said "I didn't believe you could donk it up like that."

I then explained how if its "puppy feet" that I have to play 27... I then explained how clubs look like puppys feet.

Needless to say I got paid off at that table..

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

Today while dealing a small no limit tournament one of the regular players began complaining to me that ever since the poker room started using the shufflermasters in the tournament (previously the tournament was played on tables with the machines -- now all the tables have them) he hasn't been dealt a good hand, and that shufflemasters take away from the game because changing decks on the level change creates an ebb and flow to the game that is lost when using the machines.

He was looking for a response from me, so I said "well I don't believe anything until I see the math on it"

He assured me that his belief is mathematically sound . . . then he told the Floor that he would never play the tournament againa as long as we were using the machines.

Used that one myself more than once! "You know, T5o is the best multi-way hand in poker. You can make all the straights and 2 different flushes. Great against a large field".

You can not make all the straioghts with that hand. There is one straight you can not make.

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

$2/4 NL, both players have full stacks, game's only been going about a half hour.

player 1 (big donkey) raises UTG, c/o calls, rest fold.

flop comes 552. a bet and a call. turn is an 8, a bet and a raise all in, and a call. river is a K, and player 1 shows 105o ephatically. much to his demise, player two shows A5s and rakes in the fairly sizeable pot.

player one then proceeds to tell him what a donkey he is for playing A5s, and how he can not believe that he would play such a garbage hand.

Raise preflop with one caller. Minimal action on flop and turn. Player A bets out the river with fourth pair on the board. Player B decides to call with 5th pair on the board.

Player B: "Was that a bluff or a value bet"
Player A: "It was both"
