Throw the dealer a white chip and ask that he or she *not* wash the cards. Make sure the person asking they be washed sees everything.

So, chase the donator away?

In my experience the person asking for cards to be scrambled all the time is an uber-nit,

In this particular case he was a nit, a regular and a donator so you are both right.

Maybe it's a reverse inverse triple range merge angle. Never really considered someone asking to wash cards was doing it on purpose to give off that fish scent. Hmmm

Sure, because there's no way they could use the shuffle machine to rig a blackjack game.

Sure, that's what they want you to think.

Seriously, what would the motivation be for the casino to rig the deal in a poker game?

In all seriousness I had nearly the exact same exchange at a table once, guy called it "the computer hand" I asked what he was talking about and said something to the effect of- The computer hand is Q7, the punched all the numbers into a computer and ran it, Q7 won the most, computers proved it.
Dealer agreed, either to be nice or to most the discussion along. 1/2 game, still better than listen to the players in higher stakes whine about every little thing they can find.
My recollection is that Q7o was calculated by somebody to be the median holdem hand.

Rofl yeah.. more often than not the person asking for the cards to be washed is some old head who is frustrated he hasn't picked up Aces recently and hasn't been flopping quads.

Played with a guy who seriously would only look at one card when he was in the small blind. He was 100% confident telling the table that he only needed to see one card to make his decision (I guess fold or limp lol?).

Guy dropped some other knowledge bombs like, "If you play a suited hand you should always play the same hand non-suited." He also folded QJ suited face up to a single raise with like 8bbs claiming he was looking for a better spot. Ends up doubling up with AA then busting QQ vs KK within the next 15 mins.

Probably more that just giving into a harmless minor superstition that your rational mind knows is hogwash can take way less mental energy than refusing to indulge the part of your brain that is wired to think that way. The brain loves to spot and then find significance in patterns, many of which are nonsense.

It can be +ev to just wear the lucky hat or ask for a wash here or there just to quell random thoughts from the part of the brain that thinks it actually matters.

Played in a home game with some people from school. Dude thought he had a straight with A2 on KQ379. He said the ace wraps around and makes a straight. We all laughed at him and he doesn't play poker anymore

As in the Ace plays twice? QKAA2? Or QKA23? Funny either way.

We used to jokingly call that the "Big Wheel" (as in the kids' toy) in an old home game.

The absurd thinking is that people thought it was good to laugh at him and embarrass him away from the game.

Quite.

Also, it isn't all that unusual for a kitchen table type home game to allow wraparound straights. Those games tend to have weird rules, and if your poker experience was limited to those games you would have no reason to think it wasn't standard.

This sort of thing happened more often before TV poker was a thing, but even now a lot of the people who play a split game in a casino for the first time have strange ideas of how the low works...

The absurd thinking is that you think people will agree with you that humiliating a guy who made one of the more common mistakes when starting off in poker is cool.

The more absurd thinking is that you think that running off an inexperienced player is smart.

Exactly. Those are the people you should be showing online poker to, so they can practice at 200nl. lol

Having fun in a home game is not absurd at all. Not every little thing you do has to be about some theoretical edge. Some people actually want to have fun at the table.
