The concept that it's ok to make statements about what you hold as long as you are lying is demonstrably ridiculous.

Let's say I have AA and I really want someone to know it. So I simply say: "I understand I will receive a penalty if I tell the truth about my hand, but lying is ok, so I will only lie--I DO NOT HAVE AA". I have now lied about my hand because I do have AA, while at the same time I have disclosed what I have.

Squash that notion that you can lie about your hand. What you do in your $5 home tournaments I don't care, just keep yer yap shut in a real tournament. Don't say nothin' about what you may or may not have.

It is better to just keep quite unless you don't mind a penalty as I have seen as little as a warning to as much as 3 orbits.

But you told the truth when you said, "so I will only lie."

It's best to not try to get around these rules. A savvy TD can and should penalize rule breakers and angleshooters.

Thanks, psandman, that clears it up for me.

ok... well like I said, I don't really talk in serious casino games anyway..., but I am curious now... to two things..

1st - if the trny is down to heads up (that is 2 players left) then is it open season on this stuff... you can literally say anything about your hand, preflop and during the hand? Including, from what I read there in rrop showing cards, because you are not injuring any other players position in the trny.

2nd - What is the position on verbally questioning somebody during a hand... heads up or otherwise (but with more than 2 players left in trny) - i.e. 'are you sitting there with a set sir?' - We all know many players who think out load and do question. The smart thing is to sit quiet of course... but what about answering there? If you have a set, and answer truthfully or lie, is that not all part of the game - deception et al, or would you then incur a penalty...

I see people at my local casinos all the time pretending to be Negreanu calling out hands (or attempting to...) and never getting penalised for it... and yet this is all about fishing for information/reactions.. if you were to answer in any fashion, you are discussing your hand and it's content..

This is how it should be treated.

If the hand is not heads up this is out of line .... as you are suggesting possible hands to other players ... maybe they had never considered that someone had a set.

If the hand is heads up in a tournament this still should be prohibited with a little leeway.

My problem with this sort of questioning is that leads to more chatter including answering your question. In my room it is specifically prohibited buit every time I tell plauyers not to do it I get 10 minutes of "
Its not really poker if i can't ask him what he has. This is the only room with this stupid rule ...etc etc..." so I can tell you its not a popular rule.

That being said I never bother a heads up player who is just thinking to himself and sort of speaking possibilities. I only speak up when its clear the comments are being directed to another player.

Yuckety-Yuck. This isn't stating your hand, only your opinion of your hand strength.
