Labor day weekend: LA or Reno? Labor day weekend: LA or Reno?

I'm in the SF Bay Area, and wanting to take a road trip. I play 2/5 NLHE, but also enjoy mixed games when available. Which city is preferable for poker, and which rooms in which city do you prefer?

Vegas, but it will be a lot more crowded and a lot more expensive.

Well LA has more poker tables than perhaps anywhere in the world, while Reno barely has any.

Unless there is a tournament in Reno/Tahoe, LA or Vegas is the right answer. I live in Reno, and enjoy it, but the poker is pretty much LOL bad and getting worse. You MIGHT find a 2-5 game depending on where you're staying, and mixed games are as common as an honest politician.

I'm of the opinion that there are more games and more mixed games to be found in LA than anywhere else. On a recent Saturday night at Commerce, in addition to LHE and NLHE, they spread stud, stud h/l, some 8 game mix, PLO and o/8. I was there a week ago on a del Mar trip.
Plenty of low limit stud available at The Bike as well.

Las Vegas has mixed games as well, but they tend to be spread out. Yeah, Venetian and Orleans for O/8, but little else. Hardly any stud.

Reno is a distant third to both these cities. And like you, I'm closest to reno, sadly.

Just got back from Atlantis casino in Reno today. I live here and there is an awesome $1/$2 pot limit mixed game every monday, and I think other days if there is demand. There's a group of regulars who play this game. I can tell you it is freaking fun. There are no boring games. Some of my favorite games we did today were badeucey, 5 card draw H/L split, and 5 card PLO with 2 boards (pot split to winner of each board).

I can't believe that this game is not more popular. I think some people may be intimidated. You have to have a good grasp of poker in general, as you will definitely be playing new games all the time and have to intuitively figure out the hand ranges on the go. SOO much different than playing your 534,890th NLHE hand of your life.

The Atlantis poker room is super chill as well. The atmosphere is relaxed and people are actually NICE..
