How long would a 40-60 person, £30 freezeout tournament last at a casino on average?

Depends heavily on the structure and length of the blind levels. Probably ~4-5 hours.

My bad I should have been more specific. It is 5000 starting chips and 20min blind levels, not sure what the first blind level is.

^ about 4-5 hours but you need to look closely at the structure.

If antes kick in, then the tourney will end quicker.

Take the total numbers of chips in play. In your case, about 50*5000 = 250K. Divide by 20 (12.5K). When the blind structure gets to where the BB is about 12.5K, the tournament will be about ready to end. At that stage, if heads-up and even, each player will have half of the chips in play which will be about 10BB. That should get you in the ball park.

Dude, that sounds like a lot of math. Why don't you just do the math for him and tell him the answer?

Im assuming this is a 25+5? The casino would want this over in 2 hours. Realistically it shouldnt get past 4 hours. Even that seems like a lot of play for the buy-in.

You can't do the math without knowing precisely the structure.

This. I'd assume the room in that small a tournament would start at 25/50 and push the blinds up fairly hard (lots of doubling of the blinds). I'd guess a little over 2 hours, with the room encouraging a chop once it gets down to 4-5 people to try to finish it before 2 hours.

It sounds like one of my local casino tourneys in Leeds (UK).

If so, the first guess was actually pretty accurate, somewhere around 5hrs+, depending on a deal being done at the final table, etc.

My local one starts at 8:15pm and will play up to 4:30am, but it never gets that far as the blinds are huge long before that.

5 hours sounds spot on.

Tourney will be over when the BB = ~5% of the total chips in play.

Dosen't this assume that there are never any antes?

Once it's heads up, the antes are typically 20% to 25% of what two BB's are, so it's not a huge factor. And it's just a back-of-the-envelope estimate, anyway. Tourneys often end much sooner if the players are maniacal, and they can carry on another level if the players just keep trading the blinds back and forth for an entire level.

True.

Plus, if my assumption about this particular tourney is correct, there aren't antes anyway.
