Hello im a 21 year old live low stakes player in Ottawa. Playgroud casino in montreal is 2 hours away from me and charges half the rake that my casino in ottawa does (10%!). I've been profitable for a few months now but no substantial results and with the rake eating my profits im looking to make a move to montreal (5% rake, free food and a substantially bigger poker environment). I wish to play at playground and am willing to stay in the cheapest hostels during my stays but can this be profitable? Would love to hear from anyone particularly montreal players

Kind of a simple math question...how much do you save in rake by playing in Montreal versus how much are you spending on the place to stay (plus other expenses while you're there)?

I'm not familiar with either casino, is the rake capped or is it 10% of the entire pot each time (compared to 5% of the entire pot each time)? That's a big factor too.

Are you sure the problem is the rake and not your game? Is the 10% rake capped? If it is, it's pretty much a standard rake.

If he's willing to stay in the cheapest hostels then I admire his resolve and say 'give it a try.'

I'm from Ottawa as well and have done something like this before. It will really help if you have a poker friend who shares the same passion as you. Having someone to split costs, review hands, and hang out with when you don't feel like playing everyday will really help your game/life.

In most games the rake cap matters much more than the %, because the cap is reached quickly either way. I doubt there is much difference between the rake taken in the games, but you can check to be sure.

rake cap is 10 dollars plus 1 for bad beat jackpot. Is this standard?

Yikes. That's high compared to the states where the cap is usually $5 plus $1 or $2 for promotions. Is that the cap at both venues?

Canadian dollars are worth considerably less than American dollars, so that's not as high as it seems. It's still not cheap though, and you should check to see if the cap is the same in both places.

I believe the Canadian dollar is worth about 75-76 cents in exchange to the USD. Since most rake listed on this site is in the US, a fair comparison would be to convert your rake to USD. An $11 total rake ($10+$1) Canadian would be roughly $8.25 USD. That's a bit high, but not nearly as bad as it would first seem. Most of the casinos in my region of the US run a $6+$1 or $5+$2 rake structure, so $8.25 in rake as opposed to $7 isn't the worst thing in the world.

One issue with that though is youre doing the rake conversion but not the buy in conversation. A buy in of $200 CAD is worth less then a buy in of $200 USD meaning that the rake is a larger proportion of the total "value" of money on the table.

This is only true if you assume the same nominal stakes and buyin sizes are being played with Canadian dollars instead of US. OP never said what game he plays.

I was also thinking its all relative to the average buyin as well. I mean, do we go on to assert that the player who makes $20 an hour in Canada would only make $15 an hour in the U.S.?

I understand that, I was just trying to make the rake comparison more of an apples to apples comparison. If we're converting everything, and this game is a $200 cap buy-in, then it's a $7.50+.75 raked game with a $150 cap in USD. Of course the blinds would covert as well, so if it's a $1-$2 game it's still a 100bb capped game. All I was trying to point out is that a $10+$1 rake in Canadian dollars isn't as brutal as it may seem to the players in the States. If you're looking at the rake in terms of BBs, then you're correct that the conversion doesn't change anything. It's a 5bb+.5bb rake no matter how you slice it or convert it.
