Wow, some people are so clueless and think they're the center of the universe...
no, he did it to be on the left of me, it was very very obvious, and when I called him out on it, he just racked up 5 hands later. I think he was embarrassed.

If you're against a seat changing war, all you have to do is stay where you are. Perhaps the guy on his right smelled. IMO you come off a little myopic in all of this.

I think you did
Nothing wrong and such behavior should actually be enckuraged, unless it's just a random seat change

You guys just haven't seen enough seat change wars where player moves pro moves to his left so player moves and pro moves again and rinse and repeat. Saw the same 2 players do this 9 times in about 10 minutes.

You posed the question, everyone agreed that you are the one who's out of line. Learn the lesson and move on. It's not the end of the world when someone seat changes, even if the reason is to have position on you.

1. That can only happen if there are constant seats opening up in the appropriate positions. If the game is very shorthanded then it doesn't even really matter.

2. This would only bother me if the two players in question are spazzes who can't efficiently change says without a big production and those guys annot me even when they don't move

Frances in Seat 5.
Percy in Seat 4.
Seat 6 opens up.
Percy moves to Seat 6 "to get position"
Frances moves to the newly vacated Seat 4 so Percy won't be to his immediate left.
Percy moves to Seat 5 to be to Frances' immediate left.
Frances quickly moves to Seat 6, regaining his original position relative to Percy.
Angus in Seat 2 can't stop laughing.

No, the rest of the table thinks you are an idiot but they stay silent because they want to play cards and avoid conflict.

You are totally out of line. Players can move wherever they want to move. If you want to move later when a seat opens up on his left, have at it.

Today a new table opened. There were a few seats open and I put my players card down in seat 9 (10 handed table). There was a player in seat 8 (on my right). I walked off to go the the bathroom while the dealer opening the new decks of cards and getting the table ready. When I got back the player in seat 8 had moved to seat 9 and he moved my card to seat 8. He cant do that unless the game has started because then hes technically a player moving to a seat where a new player (me) hasnt played a hand yet. Im not sure if a hand had been dealt or not yet. I walked back up as cards were being dealt.

I said "very sneaky" to him. He knew exactly what I meant. He said "Im not gonna lie. I want you on my right". I laughed and said "I dont blame you".

Its not rude and why would I get mad at someone trying to get a totally legal advantage?

I think that he wasn't embarrassed and instead he just didn't want to be sat next to an angry guy who berates people for breaking poker etiquette that he just made up in his own head.

EDIT

Also, not surprising that people agreed with you, if somebody who is obviously very easily offended verbally demands that I reinforce their incorrect worldview, I'm probably going to go along with it at the poker table. No point in arguing when I can be playing cards instead.

my take on seat changes

1)i've never asked for a seat change button
2)i don't change the often to get position on someone unless they also do it a lot. whether a good reg or a fish i'm fine with the seats being balanced over time.it might cost me money when a good reg sits down and i can slide over to the left if i want but i don't do it when it's someone who doesn't seat change a lot.

People are allowed to sit in any open seat for any reason they want. You shouldn't be playing 2/5 if you are uncomfortable with being oop to a superior player. That's how you get better.

Making a big deal out of it was probably the worst thing you could have done.

Take your ego out of the equation. Arrogance and the feeling you have of being disrespected by other players for seat changing are emotions that have no place at the poker table. If someone wants to move to my left and 3 bet my opens, its their right and their money.

Seat changes are permited in cash games, for strategic reasons or otherwise. You are also permited to voice your opinion, no big deal. If you don't like this rule, try tournaments where seat changes are not permited.

Does this mean I should tear out all the chapters on position and table selection from my books?

Perhaps we should get a Mod on it here and 'report' all the thread talk too.

OP, sorry you took offensive to it. Perhaps he could've made it less obvious but it is part of cash game play. I actually find it complementary when someone moves to my left ... that's means my game is getting to them 'somehow' and it's up to me to figure out how to make the adjustments. GL

LOL. If the guy wasn't passive he'd tell you you're the one being rude and totally ridiculous (which would be 100% true).

I seat change to see the cards better , 4 , 5 or 6 when I can. At the stakes I play, I assume 75% of players can't take much advantage of position anyway or are even aware that position is important , or even care if they do. If somebody does seat change on me to get an advantage it usually signals that they are a better player than the majority OR they THINK they are. Getting bent out of shape and making a scene about this like the OP did, is silly.

I didn't make a huge deal about it. I just asked for a seat change button after he moved to my left. I than gave the seat change button back after 10 minutes, and said I didn't like that he moved to my immediate left, but it's no big deal. The player left 5 minutes after that.

You did make a big deal about it when you got the entire table to chime in on the topic. And when you moved as a result of him moving. And when you posted this thread.

He has the right to move wherever he wants, as long as he doesn't keep moving all around like others have said. He probably felt uncomfortable that you made comments to him and left. I know I do not like playing with people who say stupid things to me. I change seats occasionally because I do not like the 2,3,7, or 8 seat due to having to strain to see the cards. If you were in the 4 seat he might have just wanted to move to the 5 so he could see the cards better.

You called him very rude, and got the whole table (and by that, I mean one guy) to start harassing him. What is your definition of a 'huge deal'?

I would leave too. I like playing against fish, but I usually prefer to play a pleasant game, not one where people who don't understand table etiquette create a hostile atmosphere.
