Re: Clarification of the Influencing Action Rule

I have a feeling I know both the casino and the "clown" who said don't be shy.

Re: Clarification of the Influencing Action Rule

just as suit says its all table talk get over it and play poker. this isnt a tournament for your life at stake.
its not even bad for the game to have people say things in the hand that dont pertain to the hands.
how about i dare you to raise me
or i got you all beat.
in cash games you can lie all you want or tell the truth.

what isnt all right is to say something like, the third guy must have a big pair. or dont forget he raised on the flop.

Re: Clarification of the Influencing Action Rule

Even in cash you should not say anything which may or you even intend to influence someone's decision. So technically your examples of Go you beat and raise me I dare you are both a violation. Now heads up chatter away. Just don't try to influence the hand multiway.

Re: Clarification of the Influencing Action Rule

it is part of live poker to try and influence their decisions. but not by mentioning hands during multiway pots.

but to bet and say "i got both you beat go out" is certainly part of the game and just table talk.

the bottom line is that kind of talk is common and if you cant live with it you will be annoyed your whole poker career. the same with friends checking it down when heads up.

Common yes. But wrong also yes. I can and do put up with it fine. Ut that does not make it right. You trying to make joe fold while i hold the nutz and want him in hurts me. The opposite can also be true. That is why it is wrong. But i will continue to tolerate it as you say part of ghe game. Still a rule biolation.

I mean, it's meant to influence action, so it's not appropriate multiway. I don't personally care, but to say it's fine isn't exactly correct in today's games. I will never step in to say this during a game though.

This 100%.

From Zee, "the bottom line is that kind of talk is common and if you cant live with it you will.."

It's a false choice. Aside from players that smell, very little annoys me at a poker table. I disagree that influencing action in a multiway pot should ever be acceptable.

Re: Clarification of the Influencing Action Rule

there are all sorts of degrees of trying to influence action. like a person looks like he may bet and i move towards my chips like i might call. isnt that trying to influence the action.
why cant a person do that. if its wrong then if he unintentionally does it then is it wrong for a person to use that info.

that is why i said talking about hands multiway is wrong. but table talk or body action is perfectly in the realm of legal table talk.
other wise silence is required during a hand.

Well, this kind of talk IS common, and has been forever.
"Technically" it's probably outside the rules, but it's pretty borderline and trivial, and there must be some sort of de minimis level where it's just not worth it to get agitated over it. Better to focus on what's important.
A little bit of judgment is a good thing.

Re: Clarification of the Influencing Action Rule

most of the time it is an action player that starts the talk in a hand.
they are there to have fun.

Poncho and others,

I recommend you avoid playing poker in the San Francisco or Los Angeles areas.
