Adding to the Parx love with big, dumb limit holdem.

In for 7, out for 37 at 15-30 LHE. Highlight included winning quads against AA which hit top boat on the river and got in for 6 river bets (against one of the nicest guys in the game, which of course made it all the sweeter).

Sure does seem like a lot of the monster chip stacks come from limit. Can someone explain that to me? What are the dynamics of live limit poker that allow these huge wins?

Not familiar with limit at all but my room does have a 15/30 that gets stacks deep enough to look like a good 5/10 NL

Because you don't waste your good hands on small worthless pots. You don't need a cooler to get a $300+ pot. I'm sure a 15/30 game has many more $300 pots than a 5/10 NL game (but fewer $2k pots). And also more hands per hour because people don't have to stare at each other for 15 seconds before every decision. Also, hands that fold the flop in NL and would have hit an underset or a worse 2 pair or something aren't folding in limit.

But everyone loves the boring NL for whatever reason.

From most important to least important, the larger stacks are in limit, because in limit poker you:

* Rarely chip up, you're always playing with the smallest unit of chip for the game, because every bet and raise has to be made in those increments. There's no point in have a $100 chip in a game (until you run out of physical room and have to conserve space) where the bets always have to be in increments of 15 or 30. Contrast that with NL where you might want to bet $500 - no one wants to do that with 5 stacks of chips. The only reason most limit players have any large denom chips is because they have a big stack and are selling chips to players rebuying with chips or cash pulled out of pocket.

* Buy in for 1-2 racks, then rebuy for more racks. So there are always racks and racks worth of chips on the table.

* The BB is much higher than the bb in NL (when comparing games of the same average buyin), which leads to larger pot sizes in the median, by maybe an order of magnitude. For example, my 15-30 game is roughly the same buy-in amount as a 2-5 NL game. The median pot size in 15-30 is probably $200-300, whereas in 2-5 it's probably $25-50. 2-5 will have $2000 pots though, which is basically impossible in 15-30.

* You can't stop people from drawing in limit. In fact, the game is basically built so that draws are often justified in calling. So more pots make it to the river, and more losing hands have to cry-call the final river bet, which is ridiculously small in comparison to the size of the pot (contrasted to NL, where most river bets are at least 1/3rd pot size, and which are often folded to). Bigger pots.

* Part of the joy we get is in pushing the large piles of chips around and then stacking and restacking them.

I might have to do some reading and give it a shot. Funny, 10 years of poker and I haven't played a single hand of limit. High level are you shooting for hands that dominate folks? (Axs, high pps, etc?)

I agree being able to play with all those redbirds does look fun! I never color up in NL anyway, tilts the heck out of people for some reason. I like castles

There's too much strategy to go into here, which would certainly derail the thread. But yes, having a hand which dominates your opponents hand(s) is certainly good in limit, just like in NL.

Why was it sweeter to beat a nice guy?

Well, it's more that he's a poker room friend. And that he delights in beating me too.

Can this also be the chip-rack thread? I suck at remembering to take pics until I'm usually at the cage.

1/2 PLO at MGMNH last night. 6 hours, in for $1,000 out a little over $2300.

Doesn't seem like tourney stacks are posted ever but I was proud of this one...

2.6M tourney chips. Starting stack was 15,000 (or 3 of the grey chips...yellows are 25k). At this point I had about 45% of the chips in play. Chopped it for $11k.

Seems like them being $25 adds up to the count perfectly.

I think it's bc everyone brings one color chips to the game, so there's more reds and less green and black.

Great thread. Here's my contribution from about a year ago. In for 300 at 1/2, left with about this much (1700) about 4 hours later. 2 sets, nut flush over inferior flush, AA held, maybe a few other notables I forgot.

A bit over 12 hours total, this was a bit short of 8 hours.

Wow....so many big stacks in here. Mine pale in comparison, but gonna post for us low stakes limit players.

4/8 Omaha 8/b w/ half kill at Seven Mile casino. Not my best session, which was in for $100 out for $820. Best pic I had on my phone at this limit:

8/16 Omaha 8/b w/ full kill at Seven Mile casino. This was earlier tonight. Was stuck $1000 between 4/8 (-$300), 8/16 (-$100) and in the pit (-$600). Bought in my last $200 in cash on me. Was down to 5 chips ($10) and was ready to go home a big loser. Got my $10 in vs 4 others. Scooped it. Built that back up to $250 or so. Then I make broadway in a ~$350 kill pot and proceeded to run super hot. This pic is the apex of it all, like $1378. Ended up cashing out like $1220:

Well done! I love every part of this story: the rare limit game appearance, getting stuck the equivalent of 5 racks, having less than 1 big bet left (!), and getting fully exhumed to leave $20 to the good.
