As another player I, too, feel I've benefited from this thread. I suspect that many of the regular posters on here may not realize how much this thread can educate players who care about what dealers experience. I do feel that after reading this thread I've become a better player, from a dealer's standpoint.
When I first started playing 2/4 limit a few years ago I'd see the dealers tipped at least $1 on most hands and think to myself "Wow, these dealers must be making at least $35-40 an hour just for dealing cards! What a cushy job!" It didn't take long reading this thread to educate me about dead spreads, dealing to tourneys, tables where no one tips, forced frequent breaks. I read here about the difficulty of getting full time work, lack of benefits, and being forced to work holidays. I read here about dealers developing wrist and back problems.
After the discussion early in the thread about players moving the button, I never touch the button unless asked to by the dealer. After reading dealers' complaints about players in the 3 seat mucking their cards by pushing them a half inch forward I make sure i slide my cards far enough for the dealer to easily reach. Same with placing bets. When I'm in the 1 or 10 seat I keep my hands away from the table when the dealer is tossing the cards. I make sure I have the dealer's attention when I raise, so there's no confusion.
I've been reading/enjoying/laughing at/learning from this thread for a couple years and lately I have posted from time to time. While I understand that non-dealers are permitted to post I do try to respect the spirit of the employee breakroom feeling the thread was set up for. While I could easily be posting every day I've posted rarely and always tried to be respectful and on topic.
I hope people here don't think this post is too long or in any way inappropriate. I just wanted to let you all know that this thread has helped me to understand and appreciate what dealers go through on a daily basis, and that when I tip them after a hand it's because they've earned it and not just because I'm expected to, and if other players read this thread and take something like that away from it, then it may be serving a purpose other than just a place for dealers to vent.
Thanks.
