How do you handle bickering players who won't stop the "no, I want the last word!" game, as a dealer or as a floor? And let's say it dies down for a few hands, and then one of them goads again with a "what? all I said was..." kind of attitude?

+1

Also, next person to say a word about it is getting an orbit (in tournament).

This works as a floor, but what about as a dealer?

Also, what if the guy says something else that's about a different topic, and maybe directed at someone else, but between the lines about the situation? Do you just kick him out anyway?

"Floor!"

I generally instruct both players not to engage with each other and to drop the situation entirely. Otherwise I start giving out mandatory smoke breaks.

Want to give a shout out to the dealers at Horseshoe Cleveland.

I played there Sunday night, March 16, and found the room to be well-run and the dealers knowledgeable and friendly. I especially appreciated that in a room full or regs (I live in Kentucky but was visiting my mom), I didn't notice any preferential treatment, etc.

I wish I got this guy's name, but his tag was on his left breast, and I was to his right at a bad angle, but the moment that most stuck with me was a dealer mistake (of course!) and he handled it perfectly. Eye contact with a sincere apology, and corrected the issue without waiting for suggestions, etc. No hard feelings and we all moved on.

My experiences at both Horseshoes in Ohio (the other is in Cinci) have been positive!

On the flop, player goes all-in. Lady with a very think Vietnamese accent says "I 'aul'" and then looks at the other player without releasing cards or chips. I say "All-in and call," and rap the table. She protests, "No, I 'ol'! If I 'aul, I th'o' in chi'!"

If you fold, you throw in cards. Criminey.

I had this exact conversation in a tournament a month ago.

I hope not.

I agree with JD by the way. There are a hundred threads already about this topic.

PSA: The issue of what should be posted here was discussed with the moderators prior to creation.

These comments are not directed at any one person.

In general, it was not created to be a place for non-gaming employees to come and poll the dealers whenever they have a question about poker. There is a whole forum dedicated to those types of threads. It may get a bit lax from time to time, but we didn't want this thread to devolve into the tedious rules discussion on basic items that we've all seen a thousand times before. That said, it was decided that anyone regardless of employment status may post in this thread, but it was designed to be a place for job related jibber-jabber.

If you are a gaming employee and are seeking out answers to questions based on procedural rules and situations at work, it is perfectly fine to post them here.
(Examples: How many of you use a dead button rule in cash games and has it caused any problems?
A dual rate I am otherwise on friendly terms with made a bad ruling on my game and made me look bad in the process what's the best way to address this?)

I strongly agree with QS - there are a TON of dealers/floors (myself included) that read the whole of B&M and actively post/discuss in a plethora of ruling and procedural threads - the Breakroom is just that, it's our little slice to talk about the nuances and 'joys' of working in this industry.

Sorry I'm late to the "last word" party, but two lines I've found to be very effective, which no one holds against me, not even frustrated bickering players:

In an authoritative, parenting, That's Enough tone: "All right, fellas, one of you is just going to have let the other guy have the last word on this." Usually, they will each strive to show that they're big enough to let the other guy have the last word, just because they're so eager to show the other guy up!

Or you go with the wise-ass tone, indicate an uninvolved player sitting next to you, and tell the bickerers, "We're taking bets over here on which one of you two is going to get in the last word on this."

I've had tremendous success with both of these lines.

The fun ones are when they sit there and bark at you like you're an idiot: "I 'aul'! I 'aul!" and waiting for you to continue. And if you ask one or the other, they don't say yes or no, they just repeat their mumble. I have no idea what you said, let's get something down for the cameras before I move on.

Nobody ever believes me that "twelve" fits into this category, but just two days ago someone verbalized "twelve" and the player directly next to him was shocked that it wasn't a call.

We have one guy that says "aul" in a very non-projected manner whether he says call, all in, twelve, or fold. I usually wait to see what physical action he takes before asking him because I have to ask him at least 4 or 5 times a day to clarify what he meant. Speaks perfect english and has no accent. It's just impossible to hear properly to anyone, and it doesn't help that I have enough trouble hearing things properly anyway.

I believe you, because I saw that happen once. Guy says “call” and puts out 12 chips, which would be a raise.

Woman on my left says to me she thought he said “call”. I told her me too, but I guess he must have said “twelve”. Nobody else questioned it, and the raise was allowed to stand.

As a dealer, what do you do if you disagree with a floor ruling? What if it's something major? Where's the line for you?

As a floor, how do you handle a dealer in the box who tells you that another floor ruled it another way?

The correct answer is for the dealer to do/say nothing and then take it up with either the dealer coordinator or shift supervisor when not at a table.
