So i'm thinking soon I want to just get up and take a mini trip to go play some poker, I prefer cash games so that would be a big part of it but I also want to play a decent tournament or two (say a 1k buy in max)

A few people I know recently traveled to Montreal to play in the "world cup of cards" festival and that seems like a great place to play with Playground and what have you... unfortunately the next one isn't until well a year from now lol.

I live in Vancouver right now and would like to see some place new, but right now lets just keep it in North America, what's good?

You'll have to narrow down your criteria a bit.

The cash games in Cherokee during their tournaments are crazy and the tournament fields are soft. Great scenery in the area but really nothing else to do. SHRPO has great tournaments and lots to do in and around Miami.

Narrow down my criteria eh?

What specifics would you like

There are WSOP circuit events and the WPT all over the US, every major casino has their own tournament series including things like the Deeptack Extravaganza at the Venetian in Las Vegas and the EPT/PokerStars Festivals has their PCA stop in the Bahamas.

So the first thing to narrow it down would be "when" followed by "what" (if you want to play 5/10+ cash game that narrows down your options) and "where". Traveling from Vancouver to Florida is going to be an 8 hour flight, not sure if you consider that to be a "mini trip".

Also, define best? Some of the higher profile tournaments also attract more competitive players. Some players like the smaller circuits that attract a lot of local regs and some regional pros versus the WPT circuit and WSOPC main events, which can attract regional and touring pros.

Is your objective to get in wild, active games? To have fun in a party atmosphere? To rub elbows with name players? To win money? To get a chance to see the poker pro lifestyle?

WSOP circuit events are great too. They're held all over the country. WPT has tournaments all over too. Plus many local casinos run their own tournament series. Where I live, one of the better rooms in the area is doing a tournament series late Sept through early Oct.

Figure out where you want to go, find out what casinos are in the area, and see when their series run.

Yes WSOPc has very good established 2 week events with ... WSOP.com for more info. These events are both traveling reg and local reg heavy with some 'name known' players popping in at certain stops.

Also try the MSPT, HPT or WPT-DeepStacks poker tours. These are typically very good events. I think the 'regular' WPT ME are a higher BI than you want, but you could satty into them and the cash games would be much bigger at a WPT event than any other due to that aspect of the ME drawing the 'name known' players.

You really need to decide what part of the country you want to visit and for how long. Even without the 'alphabet' soup tours casinos have great tournaments pretty much every weekend. They wont necessarily have the out of towners flocking in but will have decent fields at reasonable BIs.

If you want to go 'cash crazy' then sign up for 'Live at the Bike' or 'StonesLivePoker' in California. Sign up for one of their streaming tables and then you can watch yourself online later.

Whenever we see a thread like this I think it's much more important to decide what you want to see away from the poker table and then see where poker fits into the schedule at that location. GL

The Borgata Poker Open runs Sept. 5-22 in Atlantic City, and it might be a decent choice. The series features a pretty good range of tournaments and structures from which to choose, and it culminates in a WPT main event. The kickoff event is a $540+60 deepstack, and it is multi-day tournament that features a $2mm guarantee. It always has a huge field and big payouts.

The cash games at Borgata are good generally and even better during a tournament series. Borgata is one of the largest rooms on the east coast and IMHO very well run. There is a always a wide selection of games at all stakes, and the NL games get even better during a tournament as players get knocked out and pass time at the cash tables.

September is also a nice time to be at the Jersey shore. While Atlantic City has its detractors, the weather is nice in September, and there are other shore towns and golf courses close by if you want to pass some time away from the casino. Philadelphia is also only a little over an hour away, and there is a train that goes directly there from Atlantic City. Thus, if you're a tourist, you can easily visit one of the more historic cities in America.

I didn't mean to be a cheerleader for either the Borgata or Atlantic City, but I do think it could be one of your better options in the near future.

Not to sidetrack this thread, but I've read the linked thread, too. Without minimizing how poorly the Borgata handled the other situation or how egregious its mistakes were, the Borgata is still a pretty well-run room. Speaking only from my perspective formed over many years of playing there, I think what happened in the other thread was an aberration. When I go to the Borgata, I feel comfortable that I will play in fair games that are managed by competent staff.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies.

I would say I would like to play one decent sized tournament and then back up with cash while I go explore the area, I'm thinking of going for 5 days or so.

I would love to hit up the east coast (never been to New York or New England area) but not opposed to LA or Vegas if there is something really great to pass up, WSOPC is fine.

You haven't mentioned timing so i assume your schedule is free.

If my schedule were totally free, I would start by deciding where I wanted to be, then going to a major casino's website, and seeing what tournaments are held when.

Like if you want to see New England or New York, go visit the Foxwoods site, and plan your trip around their biggest tournament series, even if it's next spring.

Timing is pretty much free yes, except right now lol...after September it all good.

Just curious if there are any big ones that stand out for their set up and what not.

Just curious, what's the story behind the naming of the European open? Is there anything particularly European about this event?

In a nutshell, a popular European online site will be sending approximately 200 online qualifiers to the event. More info here:
