"ATLANTIC CITY - He took Caesars for more than $4 million, burned Borgata for about $5 million and then topped it off by beating Tropicana out of $5.8 million.

For Don Johnson, it was an incredible streak of good luck at the Atlantic City blackjack tables."

How do you guys think he did it? Can a high roller get single or double deck blackjack..? The article does mention he got some rakeback type deals where he was promised, e.g., $200,000 back if he lost $1 mil.

Spoiler:
But how much did he lose?

A number of years back, pre 9/11, an Australian Billionaire hit the MGM for 26 million is a huge hot streak. He affected the bottomline for MGM for the quarter. MGM sent the company president to Australia to inform Mr. Packer his play was no longer welcome at the MGM Grand.

When the president got back from the 40 some odd hours on the plane, he was told his services were no longer required.

Mr. Packer came back the LV just before 9/11 and found himself stuck in the US after the attacks. he stayed at the Bellagio and lost $20 million before air service was allowed to continue.

Sounds like the concept of variance and swongs seems to be foreign to the goons who administer casinos.

It's called shuffle tracking or http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sourc...1b7b9pFbFWEqYw or could be luck. Doubt it though.

Any form of +EV blackjack requires you to vary bet sizes and if he was varying bet sizes the casino would notice. This is a combo of selective stats (but how much did he lose) and simple variance.

DG, there's some great gambling stories about Kerry Packer that you may have heard. (Packer also owns Crown Casino in Melbourne and the one in Macau). My favourote story about him goes something like this.....

Packer was playing high stakes blackjack somewhere in LV and at the table was a big Texan fella, wearing the ten gallon hat and shooting his mouth of. He assumed that he was the richest man at the table and was very much playing the role of bigshot. After a while, Packer couldn't take it anymore and enquiringly asked the Texan how much he was worth. "Ai arm wurth wun huundred meelion darlars", he drawled. Quick as a flash, Packer replied "How about I flip you for it?". The Texan didn't speak another word.

The casinos (in AC) gave him the keys to the vault when they allowed him to play such high stakes. If Trop for example didn't allow him to bet $100k a hand he could've never won so much money.

Where he is allowed to play the guy behind him is no longer to coach him obv Still, I am pretty sure the guy is down lifetime to the casinos.

If he woulld have lost it nobody would have said anything to him. I remember my old card counting days when I went to an accounting convention at Caesar's in Tahoe. After the fourth day after winning eight grand, the pit boss finally came over and told me that the comps were stopping and my action was no longer welcome.

Of course when I was counting the first day and lost two grand and the second day coutning I lost three grand it went like "where do you want to dine Mr. Nineinch? What show would you like to see, Mr. Nineinch?"

Count as much as you like, just don't win and take any cash away...

It's ******ed for a Casino to deny service to their biggest fish. If the CEO is focused on results instead of EV firing him is a no brainer. Besides, they have complete control over variance with the max bet limit. They could just lower the limit next time.

Yes, loss rebates are common at those stakes
