If we was playing holdem with just the river card to come and we needed a gut shot to make the broadway straight would we call a decent bet IF the opponent flipped over his cards to show he had the broadway straight already (no other ways to win). The answer is no. We wouldn't call the bet because we can't win we can only lose or break even.

If we lend someone money in a casino we might not see that money again (lose) or he might pay it back (break even).

Now if there's a chance of a flush............

Bayes theorem is very applicable to the question of "Is the guy wanting to borrow from other guys in the casino going to make good"

I thought this was gonna be a guy comes to table and the chip runners are MIA so a guy with a big stack pushes him 300$ in chips and he slides the player the 300 for the chip runner to eventually pick up. I do not do this anymore ever since an incident about 8 years ago where I loaned these two young kids 100 each when both bought in with 5 twenties..I noticed the bills seemed somewhat "sticky" or wanting to cling to each other but thought nothing much of it. 10 minutes goes by and I see a commotion over at the chip window, I walk up and ask whats up, before I even reach them I see 2 security guys take both kids aside...floor tells me the bills were counterfeit and I will definitely get my money back...took about 30 mins and I did but never will do it again as I know some casinos may have ruled differently. Both guys were regulars who had never been an issue before, after security grilled them for a good half hour or so both were allowed back into the game...they both said they played in a home game the night before and the cash came from there.

just make sure your comfortable with loaning, if your uncomfortable then say no the thinking that you can only break even on this situation very narrow minded, ive borrowed money to millionaires and for it they have given me favors not to mention your credibility goes up if you loan out money if you ever need money the situation will provide you with that alternative .. simply ask questions and try to be polite about it dont go off calling a floorman or something over 200$. My advice is use caution and make sure you can handle loaning that money if you can do without it then loan it if you cant say no...

This use of borrow seems to be an American thing. It makes me want to drown kittens.

I've seen this a lot recently, but it's not an American thing - well, not an accepted American thing, anyway. I think it's a matter of poor writing due to poor education. We have a lot of difficult family situations and underperforming schools in this country.

I had to comment because I was just so shocked by what happened today. I have been to casinos many times throughout the years, AC, Las Vegas, Foxwoods in CT. However, it probably has been at least 5+ years since I have been to a casino. Today at Foxwoods I sat down at a poker slot machine and noticed things had changed a bit since I was last there and I asked the person next to me a question or two. About 10 minutes later, after she went through her money she turns to me and says can I borrow $20 from you. I was dumbfounded--and don't even know if I answered her right away and I am not shy about expressing my feelings. She then says "c'mon I'm only going to be over there, you will get your money back after I win" and "is this the first time you have been to the casino?" I said no this is not my first time, just haven't been in awhile. She obviously thought I was new and was going to fall for her line of sh_t. Then she starting telling me what game to play. I pretty much ignored her and said good luck to you (basically, get lost) and she finally left.

Then an older woman sits next to me on the other side and starts complaining about something or other, I acknowledged her but didn't say anything. She left. Then another older woman (60's-70's) starting playing in the row, got up abruptly swearing up a storm (this f---ing machine) and stomped off-evidently she lost. It sounded terrible for such an older woman to swear like that. In all the years I have been going to casinos I have never seen such behavior. No one likes to lose, I get it but it, but it just seems to me that something has really changed in the class of people at the casino and/or the desperation of losing money. If you can't afford to lose money, don't go. But the stranger asking to "borrow" money from me, that sure was a first for me...

I've lent money twice to other regulars at where I play.....but in both instances it was only $30 (these are 2/4 limit players)

& both times I got paid back within the week.

$30 wont really affect me & I figure $30 is enough to see what you are made of. If you don't pay me back I easily & cheaply got rid of you, because you will never ask me for $$ again.

Sometimes it has the other result. They see you are an easy mark and they keep asking for more.

I can see that happening, but it hasn't happened with me. Ask me once, ok....ask me twice mehhhhh, but ask me a third time & I'm answering something like "Look, I'm not going to be lending you money all the time. Once is OK, but this isn't cool"

I think in the end it all depends on the person your dealing with. Is this somebody you trust and is there a reason why he's asking for it. If its for enabling his gambling then thats a flat NO. If he needs it because he is short for food or rent then yea i might consider it then if he is a good enough friend.

I've never seen it and would have assumed it was essentially a "typo," not a deliberate usage.

Some likely won't , but some certainly will and do. Especially if they see you as easy target that they can abuse.

Haven't had this happen to me before and was wondering how common it was? Who in their right mind would actually loan money in this situation? Is this something that I should tell the floor about or just ignore (seems like if he is living that close to the edge he has no business in a casino in the first place).
This is always common and you always get the ponces. It happened to me today. I was grinding at my local and some loser who I have known for years was sitting on the table behind me. He asked me a couple of times if I could lend him a few hundred, I told him to f**k off every time.

I had a daily regular of a large cardroom ask me for a loan. I had played with the guy probably 50 times. I was playing blackjack at the time, I told him if I win this next deal you can borrow my profit. I won and leant the money. Next time I saw him he did not mention it.

Three months later the same guy hits me up for another loan. I tell him I would have leant you a few hundred if you had paid me back last time. (Serious tone but I was bluffing, loaned him $20 previously.)

He hit me up a third time about a year later and I declined.

I have leant friends money to avoid paying atm fees at the casino several times and it always got settled smoothly via winning sessions or a run to the bank.

My advice is only lend out money you do not care to get back.

Has never happened to me and if the guy got huffy with me I'd tell him to go *** himself. LOL @ lending casino randoms money, you may just as well go and flush it down the toilet.

Also the kind of self-entitled jerk that gets huffy if you won't lend him money is exactly the kind of person that will get huffy when you want it back and it's not convenient for him to pay.

I've had several people who don't know my first name much less my last name ask me for money in a card room. It's a joke. I'm not Bank of America. And if I were Bank of America, I'd have you fill out this loan application, and I'd run a credit check, and you wouldn't qualify, I guarantee you.

A regular at the card room where I play abruptly stopped showing up a few years ago. Now I hear he plays at a different card room, 60 miles away. The story was he borrowed $200 or $300 from a dozen or more people and switched venues so he wouldn't have to pay any of them back.

I've also heard a story about a player getting banned from a local card room for asking too many people for loans when she went bust. It was considered harassment.

This same player once paid me back $100 that I'd never lent her. I kid you not. She reached under my arm and dropped a bill behind my chip stack when I was in the middle of a hand, then walked away without saying a word or even allowing me to see her face. When the hand was over, I got up, approached her and gave it back. She claimed she was certain I'd lent it to her the night before, but I think she was just trying to establish a relationship in which I would lend her money when she needed it. (Either that or she had borrowed money from so many different people that she couldn't keep all the loans straight in her mind—which is also not a good sign.)

But here's the thing: I could win the lottery and give this player $50,000/year to gamble with, and it wouldn't be enough. She'd play too big, she'd play too long, she'd manage to give it all away.

The people who are asking strangers for money so that they can continue to gamble when they're broke and on tilt and haven't slept for several days are in a very bad place. I'll buy you breakfast if you want; I'll give you a ride home. But I'm not going to contribute to your self-destruction.

As for lending money to family members and close friends, those situations often turn ugly too. The friendship doesn't survive failure to repay the debt; family members become estranged. I'm not saying I'd never do it, but experience has taught me to be wary.
