What do you guys do? I won my first tournament (Im in the UK btw) about 6 months ago. Only about $600 for first place. Ive had some other decent results too and when Ive cashed out nothing has been said, but when I won I got asked "do I want to tip the dealers" Erm, I didnt expect that, I tip when I play cash games etc but I never expected it from winning a MTT. Being put on the spot I felt compelled and just said keep $20 back. Im not flush by any means and actually quite tight when it comes to tipping (remember Im from the UK not the US where you guys tip for everything ) Just wondered if this is something that happens everywhere, I noticed 2nd place never got asked for a tip...lol

Typically you want to find out if any money (and if so, how much) from the prize pool is withheld for staff before deciding on how much you'd like to tip. Typically 3% is standard in the US, of course it all depends, and is a very personal choice.

I think your $20 tip on a $600 win is the perfect amount.

yeah, right on man same thing happened to me almost. I was at this diner in Cali and when I got the bill the tax was right around 9%. now I usually will tip a straight 10% because I am a stand up guy so I made up the difference, the total bill was $29 and change so I rounded up. I know it was only 30c but **** that waitress asked for her job, if she wanted to make more money she could be the president of diners not the worker at diners! and she probably makes $6 an hour or something. anyway if a million customers gave her 30c each she would be a millionaire too.

Last time I played a tourney, we chopped it 3 ways and I tipped the dealers 5%. In comparison, the others tipped 1%. All my favorites dealt the tourney so I didn't mind giving a little extra.

lol are u kidding me ?

i and everybody else expected some standard rake of 10-20% and at the end when they annoucend the prizes they "stole" me like 800-1000$, so i probably shouldt not only not tip, but also go to a court or sth. 1k $ is alot for a busto student with 0,0$ income

lol, I just read this and I hope it's a level, and if it's not I hope you're mentally challenged.

I would say what you probably are, but I don't want to get this thread closed/infraction points.

Lol, Edgewise is saying don't penalize the dealers for the casino's crap policy.

The dealers don't set the rake the casino does. If you're tipping the dealer (waitress) it is for the good service, and totally removed from the casino's (state tax) cut.

I had to re-read it a couple times too, I had some great Mr. Pink comments lined up.

I just did the math.

Lets say a waitress waited on 100 customers per day and they all tipped her .30 cents. It would take her 91 years to clear her first million. And that's if she didn't buy any cocaine which dare I say would be really hard.

If you are the reasons makes little difference. Your grammar and spelling does make it seem likely.

Not nearly the same.
Sales tax are not a susprise to 99% of the population. Sales tax are not for the benefit of the employees or owner of the restaurant.

A lot of casinos will actually automatically remove a portion of the prize pool for dealer tips.

Assuming I am playing somewhere that doesn't do this, I normally tip 10%.

So If I win $1000 I am tipping $100

If I win $100 I am tipping $10

Poker is a game of incomplete information. Much of what gets posted in this forum has to do with gaining information.
IWTSTH. Refusing to show your cards at Showdown, unless you have to. Moves and angles to get an opponent to react.

Tournament tipping? Gee, sorry, you can't ask for information.
Here, or at the tournament.

Here, you get people pushing their agenda. Forget reality. Forget good guidelines.

At a tournament? Forget it. The only information that is public is the house cut.

1. How much do you pay your dealers?
2. How much of the tournament fees go to the dealers, not the TD or Floor, the dealers?
3. From the fees, how much does a dealer get per down?
4. If I give $YY , how much of that will go to the dealers? How much to "staff"? How much in the TD's pocket?
5. If I give $YY, how much will that mean per down per dealer?

Informed decision on how much to tip and where your tip is going? Fat chance.

the difference being the rake went to the tournament organizer so if they were charging a high rake, you made a conscious decision to play in the event. tipping the dealers is a separate transaction independent of your "fee" to pay in order to play.

arguing that you shouldn't have to tip the dealers because you already paid a lot in rake, when the dealers don't get a cut of the rake, is flawed.

why is it that degens will piss away money on a flip or other pointless prop bet but then bitch and moan about tipping when they already paid rake? for that matter, why will the degens bitch and moan about how high the rake was yet they still pay it?

well it was handled kinda weird, so 20 bucks buy in, 40 players max, winner gets 700$ guaranted
so since there were alooot of people wanting to play, the let i think 93 or sth like that players play, prizepool wasnt increased at all, so basically when i joined, the rake was practically zero, but when another 50 players joined, the rake was huge..

and as said before, the organizers were the dealers as well, so they got their fair cut

Was it a charity tourney? Sometimes they have really high "rake" to conform to state charity gambling laws.

I got scammed into thinking 10% was standard a bit ago.
I now do 3-5% depending on how big the tourny/prize money was
