Re: WSOP cash games question
why wouldn't you get the standard Caesars comps for cash games, at the Rio during the WSOP.

Because they don't have to give it to you and you'll still play there. The same reason they can rake $5 while next door rakes $4--you'll still play there. The same reason they can do a drop without a flop when almost nobody else does--you'll still play there. The same reason some of the strip rooms turn off most of their jackpot promotions for the duration of the WSOP but keep collecting the $1--the rooms will be plenty busy during the WSOP and this is their chance to fill the jackpot coffers.

Re: WSOP cash games question
Really? I don't play in very many jackpot rooms, but I've never seen jackpot payouts suspended during the WSOP. An example or two?

The jackpot isn't suspended...it still goes on in the regular Rio poker room (although I don't recall what exactly the jackpot is there). It's just that the WSOP cash games are not held in the Rio poker room.
You should think of the WSOP cash game area as a completely different poker room, unrelated to the Rio poker room, and entirely unconnected with CET comps and jackpots.

Dunno what everybody is doing this year, but in years past a few rooms stopped doing freerolls during the WSOP, or turned off or reduced other parts of their promo outflow. This sorta jiggering with promos happens all the time, anyway, as the rooms tinker and try to entice more play by spending excess promo dollars, or tighten up and let the reserves recharge.
Heck... Rumor has it Riviera suspends their freerolls regularly during the billiards tournaments (I've never played at Riv so this is 2nd hand). Let the billiards boys fill the promo fund, then dole it out over the lean months to the locals.

Oh, I didn't know promos were being paid for out of the jackpot fund. I thought that was illegal in NV and only places like Casino AZ did that sort of thing.
As a tourist, freerolls and like that don't affect me because I'm never going to put in enough hours to qualify anyway.

Re: WSOP cash games question
Anyone know if there will be a decent number of games in the regular Rio poker room? If there are even a few NL games bigger than 1/3 to choose from, I would rather play there. Lower rake, no flop no drop, comps, etc.

yes... that room can fill up. there is usually an over flow table or two outside of the reg room... not sure if it's a tourni/SNG or cash game though.

yes, this exactly. the tables in the amazon room do not have a swipe in for your players card so your play isn't tracked or comped.
funny story(maybe) about 2 or 3 years ago, my first time at wsop, i don't play tournys, just cash, so i take a shuttle from strip to rio and walk in the door and voila, there is the poker room, so i walked up, got on a 2/5 table(maybe 4 or 5 going) and played for hours, started talking to some brazilians at the table, commented it was my first time at wsop, and i was kinda surprised there weren't more people playing, but maybe bad economy, whatever. the brazilians explained to me that there were about 50 cash tables going in the wsop hall(amazon room) at the far other end of the rio- i thought it was just tourneys there. so after that first day, i played at the cash tables in the amazon room, till i realized there were better places to play!

Re: WSOP cash games question
Pretty sure the cash games are played in the PAVILLION room, not amazon. Amazon is where all the day 2's and final tables go on, Pavillion is where all the SNG's, cash games, and day 1's take place.
IMO, the worst players, ie fish, are at the Rio. Aria, B, V, etc... is where the standard regs are looking for the comps and $1 less rake.
Edit:
Also, be sure to head to the WSOP area to the right of the casino when you walk in, not the standard Rio poker room to the left, huge difference between the two.

Re: WSOP cash games question
How have we gone this long without mentioning the chairs at the Rio are insanely uncomfortable, which IMO is an underrated proponent of playing.

Re: WSOP cash games question
Sadly, some of the best 2/5 action during the series is at the B. I say 'sadly' because low stakes players there are treated like vermin. One thing to note though is 2/5 is capped at $500 there, so it can be a challenge when you get seated and the average stack is $1400 or whatever. But, it's not _that_ big of a challenge, because the games are generally very good.
