Why do people take it personal when you raise their big blind?

And raising preflop in general. People complain that they cant "play their bad beat hand" now

People don't take it personally, they make silly comments about it for three-tenths of a second afterwards and then everyone moves on. Really not very relevant, ignore it.

Because they can't see a flop or chase a bad beat as cheaply. People play poker for different reasons. If you're playing a 2/4 FL game, you gotta be really friendly and sociable so as not to piss off everybody with preflop raises.

But it's not their big blind. That money in front of them is part of the pot, and they can call at a discount.

I usually make a comment and smile to try to start conversation at the table

I am usually honest. "I raised because I want the money, and I figured this would get you to let me have it."

Don't take it personally its part of the game. Its also part of the game if it looks like it bothers me or you believe my commentary about raising my big blind.

Agreed, and this is my view as well.

I seek out games with players who are less sophisticated than I am. Understanding a viewpoint is not synonymous with endorsing it.

...except at the table, of course. There, I endorse ALL the goofy viewpoints.

Because it seems to them like it's always the same person picking on them...and it might be, because of the magic of position.

I tell people I have a good feeling about this hand so I want the pot to be bigger if I win.

Re: Why do people take it personal when you raise their big blind?

We all joke about how other people are jerk's for raising their BB. Obviously their raise is for the expressed purpose of creating an EV- situation for the SB and BB, so clearly they are "picking on you" when they raise.

And no matter how much I play poker, when I look down at K6s in the BB, I always get very excited about my hand and think about the huge pot I could win if it gets limped 6 ways, and then I die a little inside when someone raises.

SOME people don't. Some (usually bad players) actually do. It ends up being +EV for you though. If they want to call with trash and play OOP just because it's "their blind" and I "always" raise it, go ahead.

Re: Why do people take it personal when you raise their big blind?

Fundamentally, 99 percent of live poker leaks (this included) can be understood in a single sentence:

Most live players are too impatient to play good TAG or even LAGTAG poker, and are unwilling to fold often enough.

That's all this is. People come to the casino to play, not fold. Folding is not fun. They know that they should be folding some of their BB hands to a raise, and that even with respect to hands that they choose to play, they will have to fold the flop, so the raise interferes with them playing the way they would like to play and forces them to tighten up.

Obviously, long term, you want players who complain about this at your table, because their impatience will redound to your benefit over time.

(And more generally, understanding this single leak, not having it yourself, and taking advantage of it in other players is the single biggest key to being a winning player at low limits.)

Re: Why do people take it personal when you raise their big blind?

Good points.

Also, remember that many players are simply jackpot chasing. Most casino games are an "us vs them" mentality. We're just bros, hanging out, trying to get something from the casino. The jackpot is the same thing. Many people just see the game as passing around chips until someone hits. Raising the blind is just uncool, man.

I dealt a 4-handed FL game the other day that didn't have one preflop raise my entire down. WTF.

Re: Why do people take it personal when you raise their big blind?

This is the main reason I dont chop, people take it personal. Folds to SB who starts to muck his hand while giving me that questioning look....
Me: "I dont chop"
Them: "You dont chop?!?!?!?"
Me: "No"
Them: "Ever?!?!?!"
Me: "No."
Them: "Fine. Call."
I raise about 5x.
They spite call.
Then they check/fold 90% of flops.
yay.
