Re: Tipping after winning a MTT

i consider myself a very generous tipper. After the last tourney I outright won at the wynn for 2,875. I tipped 200. I thought that was more then fair.

Sorry. You don't go through rigorous training and I see multiple mistakes consistently.

Dealing should not be a career, it should be a transition job.

Why shouldn't they make 80k? Are you jealous?
See also- how many dealers actually make that much?

Says who? Assuming we're talking about the USA, everyone here is entitled to legally make as much money as they can. It doesn't matter what the profession. I'm not accusing you of it, but you do sound like a communist.

Again, who died and made you King? What should they be doing in your opinion? What jobs do you find acceptable? Perhaps, you should write a manifesto if you haven't already.

You should remember, unfortunately, that lots of people think less of those who make money playing poker. Do you think poker players should be capped on how much they make?

I'll side with those saying 3-5% and maybe do that for future use then depending on the size of the win. Its strange though that only as a winner I was asked for a tip where Ive cashed a couple of times before and nothing has ever been said.
This is what I do, including anything already built in to the tourney. I have routinely been asked by the floor to contribute at cashes less than first place (except min. cashing).

Putting up with people like you should pay millions.

I consider myself to be an above average dealer and have never made $80K.

Having said that, if you want to have the game dealt by dealers who are taking the job instead of working a fast food job or the local car wash, you will quickly find out how bad playing live can get.

Re: Tipping after winning a MTT

Are live MTTs really this bad that people can afford 10-15% rake + 10% tips and still make a huge profit? Cuz it sounds like you guys win these things like they are nothing and don't mind giving 20-25% of your winnings away.

I agree and disagree. If you actually go through a school, get certified, and understand the damn game you deserve to get paid as much as you get tipped. Going through the process myself right now and I can tell you that for the last 10 years I've been tipping dealers that didn't deserve it. Going through the process it is mentally and physically exhausting if you choose to do it correctly. Being in a business working for tips I don't understand why some dealers still can't get their heads around the half bet rule, or keeping tabs on pots in PL games, etc. If I deliver your pizza to you in 20 minutes and correctly, I deserve to get a better tip than the guy that serves you a cold pizza in 35. So in that case, from the sound of it based on the dealers you may have seen, they don't deserve 80k a year. I know I'm going to earn every cent I make. Own it.

Re: Tipping after winning a MTT

I won a $200 buyin MTT a few months back for ~$5K (non-US), and in the excitement of the whole thing, I grabbed the cash and headed out to party, forgot to tip. (oops)

I met on of the dealers a few weeks after the win and he asked me why I did'nt tip, and how much they would expect. He seemed ok about it but that $500 (errrrrr no) would be standard. For people that are getting paid already to me that seems excessive. I would have thought tipping for over the buyin would be a little OTT.

Re: Tipping after winning a MTT

My tips on MTT's usually are determined by the tournament, structure, casino, and my winnings.

For example, I recently played a $40 buy-in event with 100 players. I took it down for $~800 (30% rake for the low buy-in events). My tip was $40 or 5%. At this particular establishment, all tournament tips, are put into a pool, and dealers raffle/draw for the whole pool on a monthly basis. I didn't tip any one dealer anything special, as I tip them all heartily in cash games (any pot where I net more than $25 is a $1-5 tip, obviously only more than $1 when the pot is significantly larger than normal).

I think a 3-10% average is pretty typical for MTT's and personally, 5% is a bit on the low end for me. While I understand the dealers aren't getting any of the cut from the rake, I still feel that 30% is a bit high, and likely lower my tip accordingly. IE, if it was only a 20% rake, I'd have earned $900+ and would have tipped $45 or more. I would tip roughly the same percentage of my earnings regardless of the structure (unless I knew the dealers were being excessively compensated for tournament dealings). The lower the rake, the more I win, the more I tip, if that makes any sense.

Re: Tipping after winning a MTT

Most of the scheduled MTTs in LA and LV reserve 3% out of the prize pool for dealer tips, plus $5 or $10 per player for "bonus chips." This is on top of the 10%-20% entry fee paid to the house. Unless i cash top-three, i am rarely tipping more than 1% additional.
