Poker vacation on a budget

Im originally from Los Angeles and I used to frequent the cardrooms in LA county. Since work has moved me to Hawaii, where any form of raked games of chance is illegal, I havent had an opportunity to play. I'm planning on taking a couple weeks off to either participate in a series, or get some good hours in cash games. Anybody have any suggestions where I can stay and play mid stakes NL holdem games?
I'll have roughly 6k roll, 4k credit, and another 3k that I will get penalized if I touch. Pretty much looking for a deep 1/3 and 3/5 room that has a hotel nearby at a super discount. I've heard of $20 rooms in Vegas for promotion

You are definitely going to have to stay in Vegas. If you do it right you will be able to stay for next to nothing. You will be able to eat on comps and if you do not have enough then there are plenty of options for really cheap food. You will just have to make sure that you can withstand the temptations not to blow money on all of the tourist things. I don't think I could stay in vegas for 2 weeks and not waste money on other things but that is just me.

If I were you I'd stay at the hilton in Vegas. Real cheap rooms and it's right next the Flamingo. Plenty of action.

The Hilton is pretty expensive isnt it? I'm a gold member from all the nights I've stayed there and I'll pay about 250+ a night

There's no Hilton in Vegas next to the Flamingo. Twenty years ago the Flamingo was owned by Hilton but not any more.

Yeah, Vegas is probably your best bet and there are direct flights. The bus that runs the strip is $2 or $5/day and is actually pretty good so just find the cheapest room you can on the strip. Don't go off-strip like Rio or elsewhere unless you have a car or don't mind taking cabs or multiple buses.

Most places have poker rates but it isn't necessarily cheaper than deals you can get elsewhere and it might be best to try out a few different rooms your first trip anyway before you commit to long sessions at one.

Rio has two free shuttles that run until pretty late at night, one goes to Harrahs and one goes to Ballys. Between the two of them, one shows up at Rio every 5-10 minutes. Rio is usually extremely cheap and the rooms are huge and pretty decent quality.

I agree Vegas is the best bet for a cheap poker trip.

Re: Poker vacation on a budget

You can undoubtedly find your own good rates, but you might also check with a local (Hawaii) travel agent. People from Hawaii visit Vegas more than about anyone else (per capita). I even remember back in the day (when I lived there) I got free nights at Sam Boyd's California hotel because they gave free rooms in November to anyone with a Hawaii drivers license. I'm guessing there are great deals and might even be able to get comped with the right circumstances. Find a travel agent that specializes in Vegas, and see what you can find.

I thought those only ran until 1am. Even if it's 4am it's still too early for me!

Re: Poker vacation on a budget

When I go I stay at the illustrious Imperial Palace for $15-25/night.
The hotel is old and beat up, but on poker trips I'm not spending any non-sleeping time in the room so it doesn't really matter.
Quick walk to the Venetian or the Wynn, both with good games, Caesars right across the street too.

Consider staying at Excalibur and playing at MGM Grand. Games at MGM running 24/7 and the Castle is cheap but not a completely horrible place to stay. Considering you will be in the room to sleep 4-5 hours a day (or less) it provides good value and the walk across the bridge is a perfect distance to stretch your legs out while getting some fresh air as you clear your head.

Excalibur is going to hit you with a $15/nt resort fee. IMO you can do much better by staying at Ballys, Flamingo, or Harrahs (no resort fees, similar daily rates) and playing at Bellagio/Venetian.

Yeah they run until 1:00am or 2:00am, I can't remember. They start running again at 10am. I had no problem playing until 7:00am or so, having a good breakfast somewhere, and heading back to Ballys/Harrahs to catch the shuttle and crash for the day.
