People Who Can't Wait To Fold

I don't understand why people can't just wait until it's on them to fold.
So many people imply fold, all the time.

They'll uncap their hole cards, pick their cards up and hold them up maybe show a neighbor, or just go from completely interested to checking their phones drinking their drinks, etc.

It really does influence action... Not to these people, because they usually don't know better or care. But there's nothing that the dealer can really do, and if the guy doesn't care, he doesn't care.

I'm talking about when it's like 3 handed, it's raised pre, flop bets, turn bets.

Then player 1 leads out on the river, player 2 is thinking, and player 3 (Who up until this river bet acted and looked like he had the nuts) uncaps his cards... gives the neighbor a peak, holds them up to his face like "Damn... I just can't hit tonight"

All while player 2 is thinking, and then it's like, "Oh, he's 100% not calling, don't have to worry about that guy now"

Or even when there's a preflop raise, and the SB/BB last to act guys are all holding their cards towards the middle of the table implying fold, like there's a reward for who can fold the fastest.

I was on the good side of a scenario like I described tonight, but if I were the duded leading out on the river, I'd have been annoyed.
I honestly only made the call b/c player 3 had all but mucked his hand. If he had just sat there, cards capped, looking at the game, I'd have folded worried about him.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

Happens all the time live, and there's nothing that can be done about it. If you were to scold the fish for every impropriety that they do, then we'd run off even more of them than we already have. That said, I think that this is one nuance that favors a better and more observant player. Of course there are going to be times when this hurts you, but over the long run I would expect superior players to benefit more from extra information and known intentions of others.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

I agree. But like I was saying me and the other guy were the "experienced" "better" players. He was the fish, but he basically cost the other guy a $500 pot or so.

I really thought the guy betting was on a busted hand/bluff, but I knew the guy behind me might have me beat. But once he basically folded I knew I could call.

But you're right, you can't scold everyone for everything, and I guarantee if you asked this guy why that might influence play he'd have no clue.
But still annoying when/if it costs you money.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

I see this all the time and it's one of my pet peeves.

I don't look at my cards until it's my turn to act so I can't even subconsciously give off any fold tells.

You say that it doesn't affect the people who do it but it does sometimes. If you have a guy who always telegraphs a fold by lifting his cards up with his wrist cocked ready for release then when he puts a chip on his cards instead then you can logically tell that he wants to play this hand and adjust accordingly.

I can sort of see the point of view of the guy who needs to pee and looks at his first card on the button a deuce and then just gets up to pee. It's no different than him going to pee 30 seconds before and missing the hand entirely (and no one would complain about that). But when people regularly do it is another kettle of fish.

Another similar thing that bugs me is when UTG announces raise and then UTG+1 and UTG+2 fold before the amount has been announced. It can affect UTG's decision greatly.

A recent time when it affected me personally was in a tourney when I get to a flop relatively short stacked with 2 other big stacks. I would be 2nd to act. As the guy that's first to act is thinking the other big stack takes a phone call (which means dead hand in my local casino). The initial big stack then un worried by my short stack goes all in. It completely affected the hand.

As you said there is nothing much that can be done about it by dealers or the floor (I've seen people yellow carded for repeatedly folding when raise but no raise amount is announced however). The way I get through it untilted is with this mantra:

"It will sometimes affect you negatively, and sometimes positively but it will always affect the offender negatively."

that's my 2 cents anyways

People play to have fun, waiting is not fun.

It's just part of the live game... it's not right, but it's the way it is. try and use it to your advantage.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

Yeah , bugs me too but cant do much.
I will say once in a while "holdon- not our turn" and they will realize it once in a while and stop doing it.

I care a lot and make sure no one knows I am folding.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

It also bugs me but I've resigned myself to it and now just use it in my game. So many players telegraph their folds and it often comes in handy. Luckily probably only 2 other players at any given table will notice this, so we three have a huge advantage over the other six.

In my room people are given warnings/penalties by the floor for actually folding out of turn, but it's impossible to think anything can be done about implicitly folding.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

meh,

its part of the game and we need to adjust and exploit our villains mistakes and this is just one of them.

So we adjust and exploit. This will work both ways, sometimes to help us and sometimes to hurt us.

Just part of playing live poker.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

I can forgive folding out of turn once in a while if someone receives an important phone call or has to urgently use the bathroom. I see lots of people taking work-related calls at the poker table. Generally, these people make a lot of money and don't play very well, so they're good to have around.

Postflop in big pots or without a good reason it's pretty bad form, yeah, but I don't see that nearly as often as someone folding preflop out of turn to run to the loo.

As mentioned it's part of the game and it doesn't necessarily give you an advantage or disadvantage. Just work around it.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

At least when they are doing this it is theoretically possible that the player is faking it or change stheir mind and calls.

Far worse is the guy who looks at his cards and then gets up and walks away from the table .....

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

Ask for a seat change button. Try to make it so they are on your left.

Sometimes get the button twice preflop, and always have the advantage of knowing what he's going to do after you.

Not sure why anyone would get worked up over getting free information

Where you see people with annoying habits, I see an opportunity to exploit them. You'd be surprised how many easy pots you can take down when you watch people's hands and see how obvious their next action is going to be. So I'll take a little poor form for better results over the long run. This is far from the worst bad habit at most poker tables anyway.

Re: People Who Can't Wait To Fold

An unfortunate part of the game.

If it's possible to make a point, exaggerate your intent (fold, call or raise) next time they act, and have pending action before you...

If they don't notice/care/understand... not much you can do to change them. Put yourself in an advantageous position (seat change), or get a table change if it's helping others (hurting you).

Well, it's when that information is given to your opponents and costs you that works me up.

Say you're three-handed. Villain is in seat 1, Telegrapher is in seat 2, and you're in seat 3. If telegrapher shows he is folding, villain can bluff you off the pot. If villain doesn't know what telegrapher will do, he'll check, seat 2 checks, and you can bluff them off the pot.
