The problem is that the guys still had to call about ~100.

He turned over his quads and is thinking for a solid 2 minutes knowing he is beat... He finally says I can't fold this and calls ~$100 KNOWING HE IS BEAT

I still can't believe it. I guess maybe he didn't know if quads beat a straight flush and called cuz he didnt wanna look stupid?
Probably same overall concept - fear of looking stupid, but more likely overall fear of losing a BBJ if there is one- Poto does not, as I'm sure you also know.

Guy probably figured that he couldn't ask if there was a BBJ since most casinos have strict rules on talking about the BBJ and he was afraid of voiding it. So he figured it was worth $100 or so just in case there was one...

Or he's just an uber donk who views things in absolute terms -ZOMGQUADS!!!!!

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

Strange situation I started but resulted in some crazy thinking...

I had just sat down at a 3/6FL table at Cascades (near Vancouver). Very first hand I'm dealt AQ in MP (no need to post to play at this card room). Folds to me and I raise, I get what I think is one caller and the blinds fold.

Flop is Axx

I bet, get a fold from someone who says "You probably hit that ace." Trying to be friendly I show the ace say "Yup I did" and toss my cards across the line, but not into the muck, failing to realize there's still one person to act. His hands were covering his cards and chips (he is the small stack at the table with maybe 10bb). ...and I know, my bad for not paying attention, but this is where it gets absurd.

Floor comes over and rules I can still play the hand with one card exposed since the cards didn't actually touch the muck. So I get my cards back, with my ace exposed.

The guy in the big blind (who's not in the hand) pipes up that I should have to play with BOTH hole cards exposed since I exposed one card. The floor says no, just the exposed card and starts to walk away.

Guy stands up and *demands* that both of my hole cards be exposed, literally yelling at the floor person. Floorperson says the ruling stands and warns the guy not cause a scene or he'll get kicked out.

Guy slumps down in his chair and says to me "You're lucky they don't enforce REAL poker rules at this place."

It doesn't end here...

Hand continues on, Turn is a blank, I bet and get a call from the remaining player. River, a blank, I bet, guy thinks for a minute, looks at my exposed ace, and calls.

I show my AQ, guy who calls shows 2nd pair and says "thanks I just wanted to see your kicker." Guess the info he bought for just over 1/3 of his small stack didn't do any good because ended up busting a couple more times, each time reloading for the table minimum.

Well, "show one show all," ldo. You showed one card, so you should have to show them all.

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

Lady loses a $600 pot holding 66 on a 6XsXsXXs board, having shoved on the turn while she was ahead, and got called by the flush draw who hit the river. Guy at the table tells her "serves you right--you can't play that hand, that's the devil's hand, 666!" She looks at him like he's crazy. He repeats "Yeah, that's the devil's hand, you just have to fold that 'cause you're gonna lose every time!" And he was totally serious.

Though I once saw someone invoke that rule, thinking it covered this situation, there is a local casino that does require both cards to be shown if one is shown. It was a rule put in place out of irritation with a player who was constantly exposing one of his cards after the flop.

I think mucking your hand before the other person shows has to be one of the dumbest things you can do. Even if you think your beat you might as well wait and see. I've seen this on several occasions. And a couple of the times the people that mucked would have won.

Yeah... because they really need to stop this. How dare he give any information...

I'd even bet that it was the other players that were irritated, not the floor.

It would confuse them and make them have to think about one more thing, which they hate having to do since all they want to do is place small bets until the river and then try to soul read....him showing a 5 on a A65 board after raising the nit donk with AK will 100% infuriate the nit, since he can't figure out whether its 65, 55 or 54.

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

I hope I don't get any grief for this but I played with a woman today that I've played with a few times and she said the following about a 3/5 NLHE game that I see her lay regularly:

"You have to gamble in this game, it's the only way you're going to make $1,000 a day. In the long run you'll make $"

I could NOT Believe what she said. But What I could not believe even more was that the style she was playing which was a Lagtard style was making $ against the weaker players...

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

Playing $1/$2 at the weekend and player A shoves all-in for $120 into the $30 pot after the flop of 678 (two clubs). Player B tanks but eventually calls with his nut flush draw, which doesn't get there and loses to a flopped set. He then asked me if I would have called there and I said "Probably not, if I believe he has a hand. I don't think the odds were there for you to call and hope to hit". He replied "I had implied odds. I called for the implied odds". I outwardly agreed with him but it took all my effort not to smash the tank, let alone tap it.

You kinda already did by saying you wouldn't have called BECAUSE blah blah blah. Whenever people ask me that, especially on LOL-bad calls, I try to act like I wasn't paying attention and they usually ask somebody else/drop it.

You already tapped the tank, sir. Just say you weren't paying attention or that you agree you'd have done the same thing he did.
