Keeping poker fun for the recreational/amateur player

I'm sure everyone has noticed there has been a bit of a backlash towards arrogent, trash talking players that berate and try to embarrass their opponents live and online. I wanted to know why anyone would want to scare these players off by making them feel inept or unwanted. It's not only rude but if you're a pro, these players are your livelihood. Just wanted to hear some thoughts/experiences on the subject

Re: Keeping poker fun for the recreational/amateur player

a huge fish regular in my 1/3 plo game called me out as a nit in front of the whole table the other day.

I confirmed but reminded him that he was a sick degenerate and will put it in bad against me regardless for the action.

He shrugged and the next hand was dealt. be nice to old ladies and all american dads. be civil to everyone else. in action games fish know they are fish and dont like being patronized.

Re: Keeping poker fun for the recreational/amateur player

I never understoood why people need to rub it in other player's faces when they win a pot. It's only one pot, and it just pisses them off. If they are a fishs, they may lesve and never come back. If they are skilled, well, now you have given them incentive to put it to you when the opportunity arises.

You can be cordial with the other players (without slowplaying), and still clean them out.

I think alot of the younger players, many of whom never walked into a live game prior to BF, have yet to learn this. They are used to talking trash annonymously online to someone half a world away. I recently saw someone learn the lesson the hard way in a local live game. He talked trash after winning a pot. Got his arse kicked in the parking lot after. He hasn't been back since.....

3 common answers: Stupidity, immaturity, and attempting to put someone on tilt.

With the first two being the most common. Three is ultra rare.

FYP.
For a lot of people, poker isn't primarily about either fun or profit. It's about saying, "Hahaha! I'm smarter than you are!"
Of course, if they really were smart, they'd know enough not to say this.... But you don't need to pass an IQ test to get into a casino (thank goodness).

I like to have fun and laugh and tell jokes while playing. I also like to do these things while doing pretty much everything.
Some people enjoy being miserable pricks while playing. I suspect they enjoy acting this way pretty much all the time, also.

Re: Keeping poker fun for the recreational/amateur player

I called out someone this week. Player A (who says they're a regular at the foxwoods 2/5 game,) busts a recreational player, and as the recreational player is leaving player A calls them a donkey. I confronted this person and said it wasn't a classy way to win a pot. Player A just shrugged my comment off.

What a way to kill action. The recreational player was making loss calls, but was a nice enough person who just wanted to have fun. I can't imagine they want to go back to that table again.

I go by the advice of Phil Gordon, "Don't tap the glass."

I try to be friendly with anyone at the table; unless the person is a jerk to others, then I might run my mouth to tilt them for their jackassery.

How about just being nice to everyone, fish, shark, or in between?

That falls under life rule # 2 "Try not to be a douche".
Second only of course to "Don't be a dumbass".
