Except they're not near the casino? #ronburgundy

(well, ummc is. But that's a part of UMB, and I've literally never heard anyone call it that. And I used to work at UMB, sooooo)

Meh, I've been here 8 years and have never once heard anyone call it umb. My dentist is there and the bills come from ummc. /derail

Super excited that anthony is opening this room. You did a great job at de park and I'm sure you'll do the same here. Did you used to work at the Venetian as well?

A couple suggestions: I'd love to get some mid stakes limit holdem games going. We have a pretty good one (20/40 and 50/100) game at md live that runs fairly regularly. It'd be nice to have something similar at the horseshoe.

Also the low limit omaha high low games run basically 24/7 so you might want to try some of that. Maybe 5/10 limit.

Also, def get some plo games going. They are a ton of fun and lots of action.

Just my .02

Regardless of the proper letters for the nearby campus...

Fact is, the neighborhood sucks. Park in the garage. Always.

We'll just have to hope that the gentrification wave that's been hitting east Baltimore spreads to west Baltimore soon.

Do you have a source? Or is this one of those FOAF* things?

PS I really hope it's true

*FOAF: Friend of a friend - as in "this friend told me his cousin's sister's nephews buddies boss heard it was ..." aka rumor, gossip, unreliable information, folklore...

Practice your poker face: the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore will open Aug. 26.

The South Baltimore Gaming facility will host a grand opening that night — pending regulatory approval — with two soft opening nights leading up to it. The $442 million casino will be open to the public for eight hours on Aug. 18 and 21 to demonstrate its compliance with state rules and regulations for the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission. The casino will donate all its profit from those nights to charities that have not yet been selected.

Any word on the soft open?
When I asked specifically about a soft opening, I was told (by Horseshoe) that more information about events leading up to the grand opening would be released by the end of July.

For the first time ever, Maryland gets added to the mix, with a stop coming to the soon-to-open Horseshoe Baltimore (Feb. 26 - March 9, 2015).

so for a casino this big (size of a football stadium), why does it have so few poker tables?

they must have seen how much business Md Live does (all 52 tables in use on weekends, and there are still wait times).

I think 25 tables will be fine.

Look at what MDL did to C-Town & DP when they opened.

I'm sure both rooms will keep pretty busy, but the extra tables that Horseshoe brings to the area will drastically reduce wait times on the busiest days.

And there will be plenty of action at both locations.

Because one pit table brings in as much revenue as 3 poker tables.

Also, if they had 52, and the next casino had 52, then then number of tables would have tripled. Do you really think that each poker room would be as busy as MDL has been the past year?

Yes. Baltimore City (downtown) is south of the tunnels.

hm.. interesting..
so people north of the tunnel has to pay a toll to get to Horseshoe?
or is it easy for them to exit b4 the toll and take local roads to Horseshoe?

Living north of the tunnel, I have to pay $8+ in tolls no matter where I go to play poker.

I live in the city, just off of I-95, north of the tunnels. Even going to MDL, I've been taking a route through the city to avoid the tolls both ways. Takes about 10-15 minutes longer each way, but I'm saving $8 minus the small cost of extra gas every trip.

I know the tables aren't going anywhere, that extra few minutes to get there isn't that big a deal to me.

interesting that they put the casino south of the tunnel.
I would have thought putting it north of the tunnel would be better to differentiate it from md live.

ie:
people north of the tunnel no longer have to pay tolls to get to a casino

so horseshoe is vying for the same people that md live is.
I guess people south of the tunnel have more $ than people north of the tunnel?

ie:
people south of the tunnel will be more willing to goto horseshoe because there's no toll.
while people north of the tunnel will be less willing to go (in the long run)because of the toll.

horseshoe is aliening the people north of the tunnel to try to attract the wealthier people south of the tunnel?

The tunnels go under the part of the Bay that extends into Baltimore Harbor.
Coming from the North you can just take Rt 83 downtown or get off 95 or 895 before the tunnel and drive west into town - no tolls.

From the south just get off 95 at Russel St and the Casino is right there.

No tolls needed either way.

Hi guys,

I moved away from MD a while ago.

When did they allow poker? Did locals take to it quickly? Games good?

If you plan to play so often that the toll is a serious concern, get an E-Z pass on the commuter plan. The toll for the commuter plan through the tunnels is $1.40 per trip.

The way it works is you pay for 50 trips up front, and those trips are good for 45 days. The breakeven point on savings is 17 trips. (That's one way trips - or 8.5 round trips)

So basically if you go through the tunnels more than once a week on average, you'll save a ton with E-Z pass, and it auto-renews from your credit card.

That - or take Eastern Ave. into town and add 15~ mins to your trip to save a few bucks.

Map on how to get from before the 95/895 split to the casino w/o tolls:

Rivers casino, winter classic Penguins-Capitals, parking was free, if you "going to play in the casino, not watch the game", verbal promise before entering casino was fine.

But this isn't Rivers, so this doesn't really tell us anything.
