Re: Guy calls the clock on me. Out of line?
What do I consider reasonable?
Depends on the circumstances. How big is the pot? How deep are they playing? How has the game been playing? And does it appear that the player is actually thinking about the decision or is he spending his time being a douche.
I have never called for a clock on a player who i believed was legitimately thinking about his decision.
I have called for a clock against a player who announced to the table that he was going to constantly stall for time because he was mad that a player had called for a clock on him earlier.......
I called for a clock once in a tournament when we were on the bubble in what was supposed to be hand for hand and a player at the other table went all-in so our tables short stack decided to not act and wait to see the outcome on the other table (I believe in hand for hand the action at the other table should have been halted to prevent this). I tried to get the clock because I felt it was unfair to the other short stack to allow this player to hold up his action.

Re: Guy calls the clock on me. Out of line?
A key tactic in poker is to put your opponent to a decision, make him sweat a little. OP tried that by showing his hand, other player did it better by putting the clock on the OP. Other player had the OP crushed, he played the hand perfectly by calling the clock and compelling the OP to shove with the worst hand.
I love it, even if it did slow the game down.
The result is that the OP will probably never flip his hand over again.

I doubt that.

Playing hand for hand the TD should control this. When playing hand for hand and there is an all-in I instruct the all-in table to wait (don't turn the hands up and don't deal the cards) the other tables are not entitled to see the outcome on the other tables before playing their own hand. Also I have never had to do it, but if a situation arises where a table is playing slow to try to get an outcome on the other table before they finish their hand, the TD can direct them to deal street by street.

Did you turn your cards over to get a read?
Cuz I know he got a read off you.

Seems to me it was brilliant...for seeing you had a tough hand to toss..AA..and knowing he had you beat, then snap calling a clock to look weak and induce a call or push from you...cant see any other motivation other then he was sick of waiting for his pot...

Re: Guy calls the clock on me. Out of line?
I've seen this done several times in the last months. I think it's becoming known as a good way to counter the guys trying to get reads and I'm very ok with it. Whether the guy showing the cards has been thinking for 5 seconds or 5 minutes, soon as he turns his hand over to start the soul read process it's a-ok with me to call the clock and turn the tables on 'em. I have never done it, but I'm tickled when others do it. Once you flip the cards, you've demonstrated you aren't really thinking about the hand anymore, you're trying to see some flicker in your opponent's eye, some heartbeat in his neck or forehead, some twitch of his legs, and 60 seconds is plenty of time to hunt for that so we might as well start the clock ticking.

I agree. I also think when a player starts making a speech it is time to call for a clock.

Re: Guy calls the clock on me. Out of line?
lol... what a trainwreck of an OP. As soon as he mentioned the guy goading him to fold, I knew AA was the worst hand. It's like when a guy says, "What do you have, kings?" 99% of the time, they have kings beat.
Our intrepid OP pulled the wrong shenanigans on the wrong guy, tried to look cool and failed, made the utterly wrong read and got embarrassingly stacked. Now, pride bruised, he retreats to 2+2 hoping to get confirmation on how much of a meanie face the villain was.

I wish all villains would show cards and then shove all in...

Re: Guy calls the clock on me. Out of line?
No. Clock is 60 seconds which is a long time by itself. It really should just be automatic. Now, if there's confusion about a betting amount or something legitimate like that I start to feel some sympathy but if it's just something like he shoved, you have to call or fold, if you can't figure it out in 60 seconds he deserves it imo.
In your case there's also the added element of you taking it beyond a standard tanking situation by flipping your hand. If you were sitting there just re-constructing a complicated pot in your head and he called a quick clock to throw you for a loop again, maybe a slight breach (but I like it because slow play costs me money and I also just think it's against the spirit of the game...it's like a guy playing chess and picking up then putting down every legal move in a game w/ no clock) but here you've flipped your hand up I mean basically your gamesmanship just got re-upped it's not a case of a guy just picking on you to be a dick.

I'm glad I go against that trend apparently. Rarely talk but the few times I've brought that out I've always not been able to beat what I say.

Re: Guy calls the clock on me. Out of line?
Hey OP showing your cards "to get a read" is an overated concept used by amateurs mostly. It really only has a slight chance against beginners, and you still must be fairly good to get anything usefull from it. If it was me you did this to me, I would smile big and say "OK 10 seconds and I call a clock, your move my friend!" Nothing confrontational needed.

Re: Guy calls the clock on me. Out of line?
ITT OP is lolmad his aces got cracked and someone beat him at his own amateur game.
I honestly hope you take something away from this, OP. Namely, don't try dumb TV tricks IRL, don't show your cards then shove, and don't expect sympathy when you started the brodown and villain one ups you.

This is so true. If OP won this hand there probably would not be a thread about it. Another reason not to show cards is you look like an idiot when you make the wrong move.
