This should interest anyone who plays at *********** or any of the other clubs around Columbus. I just saw a spot on Fox 28 advertising a story they will be running tomorrow about local card clubs. It went something like this:

"Illegal underground poker clubs: We'll tell you what laws they are breaking. Who gets hurt every time the cards are dealt? Why aren't the police doing anything about them? "

****ing great

Let me guess: The people being hurt are the poor, gamblers, who are victims being unwillingly and unwittingly separated from their rent moneys!

I have always hated Fox 28. I remember when the UB thing finally broke on MSNBC, the Washington Post. I told Fox 28 about it months before and they said they were not interested in helping players doing illegal acts. Then they start calling me and emailing me, I say sorry you missed the boat. I knew they wanted to do a negative piece on online poker.

I have friends who deal there. If they lost their jobs, boy if you thought my endless rants and campaigns about UB were long. Just wait until I start attacking Fox 28.

This club is nice and the locals are good people, even some police officers may play there. I have since moved from Columbus, but haven given everyone the heads up.

I'm confused here.

You say you have ALWAYS hated Fox 28.

Then why go to them in the first place about the UB scandal?

But you do go to them with the UB scandal before anyone else has it and they turn you down.

Then they come back to you and you turn them down becasue they are going to do a negative piece on online poker.

Did you think they were going to do a POSITIVE piece when you came to them with a story about people cheating in online poker?

I lived in Columbus. The UB scandal was new. I figured I would start locally to get the story out. Then try nationally. At the time I was more concerned about getting the story about UB than a story about online poker.

I just wanted to get the story out. After seeing the MSNBC guy had done a story about the AP scandal and it wasn't too harsh on online poker in general, I worked with him.

I was just trying to Use Fox to bring attention to UB so they would have to come clean, which they still haven't.

The guy who called me from Fox didn't know what he was talking about and it was clear he didn't do research. At the time in July 2008, I didn't care about the effect of online poker, my primary worry was getting the UB story to the masses. Once that was done, I had no need or no intention to talking to FOX 28.

I have friends at these clubs that may lose their jobs if shut down. I have always hated Fox, as you put in bold and got confused about. Again, Fox, like all other media, I contacted b/c they could get the story out. I see nothing wrong for me using them, as they would use me.

I watched it…was not NEARLY as bad as I thought it would be. I fact, I would even go as far to say it may have been positive for local card players. The 1st angle was that you are taking money away from little league baseball teams because the charities have less poker players to play in their games. Then they had an undercover guy go to a north side club & a place on the east side. Just showing a little what it looks like & showing that dealers do get tips (so what???)

Then they interviewed a Franklin County Prosecutor (I think that was the title). Even she admitted that if the establishment can prove they are a legitimate private club that there is really nothing she can do.

The more I think about it, I would say it was overall positive. I don’t see the gaming clubs going anywhere based on that story. They might even get more players.

Damn I wanted to watch this after seeing all the previews. Pretty lol if you ask me, there are much more important things to be worrying about.

I've played a handful of "charity" tournaments. The only club I know about is the one in the northern part of the city, but I've always been too intimidated to actually go lol. I mean is it really worth going to these clubs? I guess I enjoy playing live poker every now and then but it's just so much easier playing online.

I'm moving closer to the club up north at the end of the month so maybe I'll give it a try. If anyone has any info PM me.

The tips thing is a big deal because the way these clubs are structured, the tipping issue is the difference between legal and illegal.

The woman they interviewed is a Columbus City Prosecutor (not Franklin County). She said that as long as the clubs were private and not raking, then card games could be held on their premesis. One club pushed ("reminded") the players to tip more than the other, and she said that pushing the tips is more evidence that there is illegal activity. She basically said that just because you see tipping occur, that isn't evidence that tipping is required, or will happen the next time.

And yes, I agree that it actually sounded more positive than negative -- even if the title of the story (still posted on the ABC 6 News Website -- ABC and Fox are sister stations and share resources ) is ILLEGAL POKER.

And the angle of the kids being the victims was just stupid.

You should give it a shot if you want to play in Columbus. They are open 6-6 and always have multiple tables running. The action is great. If you want any details, or have specific questions, PM me.
