Yesterday there was an 18 man sng at a card club near to my home. I found myself in a situation where i asked the dealer if she could count how big the pot is, and she refused to saying its a tourney, and its not usual to count at tourneys, only at CG...was she right to deny that?

The dealer will usually spread the pot out so you could estimate the size, but should never count the pot (other than PL games) in cash games or tournaments.

afaik the only time the dealer is "supposed" to count the pot is in a pot limit game. At my local joint they will not count the pot, spread the pot, or tell you how much is in the pot unless it is a pot limit game.

edit - cash game or tourney

It's considered a skill to know how much the pot has in limit and no limit, while in pot limit you have to know it in order to bet max.

Players are entitled to be informed of the pot size in pot-limit games only. Dealers will not count the pot in limit and no-limit games.

You know the total put in by each player on each betting round, right?

Just add it all up in your head.

Yes, she was correct to deny it and she should not be counting it in cash games either.

The reasoning relates to the rule of one player to a hand AKA OPTAH.

Knowing what is in the pot is an important piece of knowledge that aids in making decisions. If you pay attention, a very important skill in poker, you will know how much is in the pot.

A good dealer does not need to count the pot, they will know how much is in it.

Some rooms, such as mine, do not allow the dealer to spread out the pot even since they do not want the dealer going into the pot for any reason except to get out the rake.
