Re: Counterfeit 100 dollar bill in Vegas poker games
I have never gotten a counterfeit $100 bill, nor have ever heard of it happening to any other players. I used to worry that this could happen, but out of all the crazy stories in poker, fortunately, this one doesn't occur.
Your thread title is also misleading to people who don't read your post to the end. Bad press, aka, crying over spilled milk.

Re: Counterfeit 100 dollar bill in Vegas poker games
I am still trying to wrap my brain around sitting down with $10K in cash, maybe half fake.
Then trying to exchange the cash for chips in the pot over a couple of hours and assuming no one will notice the fakes.

Re: Counterfeit 100 dollar bill in Vegas poker games
A number of the replies to the OP tell him that he should not have left when the floor returned reporting that the bill was real. However, the OP says
"At that point I felt something was off so I immediately racked up and left."
I would think this paranoia would cause the OP to not play his A game and therefore he was correct to leave.

Re: Counterfeit 100 dollar bill in Vegas poker games
When I played in vegas for the first time I really didn't like the cash on the table. Here in Montreal it's chips only on the table, and although I didn't really fear that the cash was a true risk at the tables I was at, I have to admit that some of these scenarios went through my mind...
I also found that it made it tougher (at low stakes games) to visualize how much people were playing. It's tough to eyeball whether a player has 300 in cash behind or 500 from across the table. Not that big a deal - I'm not shy, I just asked if there was any question, but still...
At the same time, I note that where I play there is quite a bit more in chips in the tray at all times. Dealers themselves give players their chips when they want to top up or if they bust and want to rebuy, and get regular fills to the tray to keep their tray at the correct balance (first player buy-in MUST be from the cashier/cage). So I can see to a casino how that might be a problem - more chips in the dealer's tray means relatively more chance for problems.
No matter where I am, if I am in line at the cashier to cash out from the night I refuse to exchange my chips for someone's cash (in effect acting as the cashier for that person). The only exception is if a floor manager asks me while he's doing a fill for one of his dealers.

Re: Counterfeit 100 dollar bill in Vegas poker games
I do not think you are overly suspicious or wrong in your thinking.
I was playing three years ago during the series and saw a guy put roughly $3k in fake bills on the table. After a decent sized pot that I won off him I thought something was funny about the way the bills felt. I ratholed one of the bills, got up, and took it to the cage where they confirmed my suspicion. Caught the guy red handed.
I always carry one of the fake bill pens with me wherever cash plays now.

Depends how good the faked are, there are some very talented counterfeiters that pens are useless and to the naked eye, it looks legit. But then again, if it fools you, it'll prob spend just the same elsewhere

Re: Counterfeit 100 dollar bill in Vegas poker games
One thing from my original post that I would like to reiterate is that I worked at a bank for about a half year and we were trained to spot counterfeits using many techniques including visual, touch and the more obvious security designs. I've handled counterfeit bills at a bank before and they were usually very good counterfeits, most people wouldn't know, but it felt weird to me which should hold a bit more clout.
Anyways I left the game because my focus was gone. I usually try to leave the game when I'm not playing my best or winning game, even if fish are still there.

Re: Counterfeit 100 dollar bill in Vegas poker games
I understand the suspicion at first, but after the floor/cage confirms authenticity I don't get it. And if I knew that the guy knew I was falsely accusing him of something, I'd apologize. Then I would leave because I'd be pretty embarrassed.

SOL. The casino stated that they were not responsible for checking the validity of the cash on the table. A couple made a big deal about it who had recieved a little more fake money than me, but they did not get the casino to cover anything.
I understand why though as it would open the door for teams to come in with fake money adn dump it to another player, then casino would have to exchange the fake money for real. Kind of a can of worms imo.

Re: Counterfeit 100 dollar bill in Vegas poker games
There was a player trying top buy into the main event on sunday and 7 of his bills were fake. He, ofc, claimed to have received them playing cash games.

In this situation I am inclined to believe him. Hard to believe he'd risk so much trouble over 700 when the buy in is already 10k.

I would also tend to think that the "cash games" weren't in a casino.

A guy passing 7 fake bills at once should be arrested and at least questioned.

The casino knows who he is. They will tell the cops who can tell the Secret Service. If they want to question the guy later, they can. No need to detain someone on the spot.
