"But I said caaaaaaaaaalllllll"
"After you put chips in the pot you could say 'Purple Monkey Dishwasher' and it wouldn't change anything."

Re: The Breakroom: low-content gaming employee chatter thread
Are there any people that consistantly lose everytime you deal to them? (im not talking about the fish) Im talking odds defying stuff. With me, there are a handfull. Some do it to themselves, but with this one dude, it seems like everytime I deal to him, he loses. It's too bad, cause he's a great guy, good player, takes his beats well, and will still tip me on the very rare time he actually wins a hand when I'm dealing.

Re: The Breakroom: low-content gaming employee chatter thread
I don't think there are any players who I always dish out losses to.
But there are probably a couple of players in my room who will disagree vehemently with me on that.
Which reminds me of my favorite line when I get the players who are folding every hand and get a little irritated with it: "Just keeping you out of trouble" said with a smile on my face.

Re: The Breakroom: low-content gaming employee chatter thread
I had a player throw cards at me a couple of times as he was folding, on the third time I told him not to let it happen again. He tells me, "You lost me $1500 the other night!" I told him I did no such thing. He said that I did lose that money for him and he would take a break when I was in the box and he got up.
After my shift I was talking to a coworker and told her what happened and she said, "oh, he's getting us mixed up. I dealt him some real coolers the other night!" LOL

I know a couple. One is a jerk, one is the nicest guy in the world, both get crushed when I'm in the box, and both whine about it.
What neither seems to realize is that they tend to play horribly when I'm in the box, because they've already decided, "Here comes YTF, so now it's time for me to lose." They over play their hands like crazy, figuring there's no downside--either they'll win a huge pot (which never happens), or they get to point at me and say, "See? I'm right again!" when they lose.
Win a pot, or feel smart, there's no downside to playing bad, so they play horrifically bad.
Worst part is, I know that both guys are winning players long term.

Re: The Breakroom: low-content gaming employee chatter thread
My favorite along those lines was the real jerk who got felted and screamed "that's why I don't tip dealers at all, all you guys f*ck me on the river."
Literally the next hand, he tilt-spewed all of his rebuy in the middle with top pair-crap kicker and got called by someone with a much better kicker. I rivered him his miracle and he doubled up.
He was condierably quieter that time... Still no tip though so he was at least consistant.. lol

Re: The Breakroom: low-content gaming employee chatter thread
There's one guy who groans when he sees me in the room.
A couple of months ago, he entered the daily tournament almost an hour late. He played his first hand (of course), and he lost by paying too much for missed draws (of course). He complained (of course) that I never give him good hands.
I'm sorry the one hand you saw today didn't work out for you.

Re: The Breakroom: low-content gaming employee chatter thread
About 20 years ago, it wasn't unusual for rooms to fire dealers that lost too much money at BJ or other table games. If I remember correctly, one of the executives that Donald Trump had working for him that died in a plane crash was known as "The Atheist" because he argued that with a theoretical advantage, it didn't matter what the monthly results were. If the management believes in luck, should it really be a surprise that the players believe the same thing?

Re: The Breakroom: low-content gaming employee chatter thread
There was a guy last year that for a few weeks all I heard was "You haven't dealt me a hand in 6 months. You haven't dealt me a hand in 6 months. You haven't dealt me a hand in 6 months."
Finally I broke out the never-fail line (said with 0 sarcasm) "You're not mad at me are you?"
He immediately shut up. Soon after he had a rush during one of my downs and now we have a nice rapport win or lose.

I made a mistake recently when I saw a dealer from a place I play at the day after I lost there. I mentioned this to him and he seemed uncomfortable. I figured it out and apologized to him later on - I didn't barage him with questions or anything, but he just didn't want players to know he was a poker dealer while he wa playing.

"I really hate it when dealers from other places come into where I work and tell OUR players how great THEIR cardroom is, so forgive if I don't want to sit here and talk up the joint I work at."

It is psychology. What looks more intimidating, 5000 in chips as 5 1000 chips or as 50 100 chips? Even though the amount is the same, the brain typically interprets the stack with more chips as being a bigger stack.

This is a -EV post, if you ask me. Players will tip you better if they feel like you're their buddy, and here's one of your customers hanging out with you while you're off the clock. Chat him up, answer his questions, and make sure he sees you tipping the dealer like a monster every time you win a pot.
And many players gets barraged with work questions when they play poker. I've seen foot doctors get barraged with questions about their profession while they're out relaxing at the tables. Same goes with waiters, teachers, and attorneys.
The worst was when a former contestant from the TV show Survivor sat at my table. He'd come in 4th or 5th place a few seasons earlier and one of the players recognized him. He was barraged with questions for my entire down to the point that I had to rap the table to keep the action going. I can't imagine what it would be like if an actual A-list celebrity sat down at the table.

Kerry Packer, an Australian Billionaire, won $24 million from the MGM Grand in a single trip. MGM sent their president of the company to visit Packer in Australia and explain to him that his play was no longer welcome at the MGM. The loss affected the quarterly bottom line drastically.
When the president got back from flying round trip to Australia, he was fired along with the casino manager.
Shortly there after, Packer was stranded in Las Vegas following 9/11. He lost $20 million at the Belagio.
