Re: Angleshooting an Angleshooter?

If i may me the voice of dissent here. He's angleshooting with the 'nice hand' trying to convince you to show.

Your move, however, would be perfectly fine. There's nothing at all wrong with acting like you're going to muck to a call/raise when your opponent is thinking. Just like there's nothing wrong with acting like you're going to spread your winner when you bluff or saying 'what the heck, i'll raise.' when you've got the nuts. This is how poker is played. Why would we possibly want to make acting weak when strong and strong when weak illegal?

Re: Angleshooting an Angleshooter?

You could always split the difference. Lift your cards half an inch off table and wait. Don't make the "I'm about to toss these in the muck" wrist action, like you're faking a fold, just hold them slightly off the table. Are you lifting them to flip them over? Or lifting them to muck when he folds? Or lifting them to muck when he calls/raises?

Now you've just reflected the ambiguity back onto him. He doesn't know what it means, and you aren't really being a jerk. You're just prepared to respond when he completes his action. Why, you're just preparing to speed your action for the benefit of the table when he FINALLY completes his! Holding your cards like you're ready to make either motion, if anything, only puts more pressure on him to finish his action.

I'm not sure I even really believe my own advice here. I actually think the previous posters are probably right - don't react to his angle, just wait it out.

Re: Angleshooting an Angleshooter?

I love it when some tries to shoot, and then you get them to raise. It's an oddball move, but it does work when you know thats what they are doing.

Not to bring up "pros", but anyone ever check out how Phil Ivey always holds his cards up in the semi-going to muck position, then waits for the opponent to try to bet him out of the pot? then he comes back over the top. Maybe i've just noticed this from seeing it all the damn time, but it still works for him.

DING! That's my take on this. OP's opponent was angle shooting. OP is just acting. We're allowed to do that in poker. There is a difference between those two kinds of deception though I don't want to try to spell out in print what it is--I don't think I could come up with exactly the right legalese. But it's a big difference.
