Do you think after everyone but the BB folded he decided that was probably the player he didn't want to be up against so he folded hoping not to bust out?

Perhaps. Perhaps he wanted to give that guy his chips. I don't know.
i take the opposite side here. in a cash game i give him the bet back as you also need to keep the spirit of the game.
but in a tournament it is a game of rules and following them. when you make a mistake and its forgiven it affects all of those that werent in the hand as well.
his bet should stand. just as it should if he had moved in and immediately mucked with many players left to act.
if there is chip dumping that is a separate ruling to be made.
I mean 1 thing that should be considered... if the player and dealer both don't see BBs cards and muck the all in player's hand BBs hand MIGHT have been hidden and should be killed. Just saying this happens more often then people think and I've never seen it ruled properly b/c of it.
That being said it should be he loses his stack but chip dumping started happening like this I think so it's at TDs discretion and usually they just make it a minraise or call (1 or 2bbs). Outside a tournament I've seen an all in player's hand get killed by dealer accidently when scooping the pot and they've called it a missdeal once when it was heads up and the other guy hadnt acted yet (both players agreed though) and another time when it was a 3 way all in just took his $ in and his hand was killed.
we all make mistakes but in any game we have basic rules that need to be followed.
just like in golf if a player accidentally touches his club to the sane while in the trap it is a penalty. or in pool if you bump the cue ball it is a scratch in all games.
