When u should really quit poker... When u should really quit poker...

I find it interesting that many people have suggested to quit when the losses begin to add up. On the surface this makes sense and is a fair point. I, however, have a slightly different take. I believe sometimes a profitable player should quit, just as a losing player should not quit. If the profitable player is obsessed, plays all day, won't get up to cook or go out, socialize, exercise, etc, and just sleeps a few crappy hours only to wake up the next day and immediately start another poker session...there is a problem. This person will very likely become depressed, suffer anxiety, etc, and so he should probably quit. What's the point of the money if all you do is play poker all day and all night?

On the contrary, if a losing player is in control of his time, mixes things up in life, has a day job with a steady stream of income, and loses an amount he can afford to lose, but is having fun playing poker....I don't see a need to quit here. Just because he's losing money doesn't necessarily mean he should quit. The money losses could just be the price to play as far as he's concerned. Most other hobbies cost money---golf, skiing, weekend auto-cross, etc.

So it really shouldn't be about winning or losing money, but about the quality of life you have when you are playing poker.

While it's perfectly fine to convince your mom (or anyone else you personally care about) to quit, why on earth would we want stupid and impulsive players to quit.

I'd encourage stupid and impulsive players to keep playing.

"Don't worry, man, your luck will change."

Good, thoughtful players, they're a different story...

"Dude, why are you wasting your time on poker, you could make way more money day trading."

We want good players to quit and bad players to keep waiting for that big break.

I quit poker a long time ago. It was no longer enjoyable I see what I had to become to keep playing the game I used to love. Poker in all honesty is rather boring, long perios of folding, waiting, watching, then I might get a hand just to fold the flop, then I go back to folding, waiting, watching.

I wouldn't say I was a loser at poker I made some money, but the time I spent earning that chump change was not worth it. Poker stopped being fun and more mechanical, it had lost it mystery and became a system of rigid fixed rules, methodical thinkng which was boring and repetitive.

Oh, I never said I wanted those player's to quit. I'm just saying those players should quit if they knew any better.

I wouldn't encourage them personally, I'm just responding to op's question

I think it really depends on the person

Are you a recreational player with a high paying job playing for fun? Dont quit

Are you a college kid failing at poker and failing all your classes at the same time? quit

I am trying to find out if I should just quit playing NLH altogether as I have tried to improve learn and improve somemore and no iv been non profitable over the last six months and have no hesitation idea as to why I'm not paying on draws and I am getting my money in good and losing all the time minus once or twice. over the last month I have kept a tally and out of being all in miles ahead both pre flop and post flop 282 times out of 300 I am still out of pocket please note I have not taken flips into consideration with these figures as I'm at the end of my tether with it I'm considering quiting altogether as all the pros say along as you keep putting it in ahead you will be profitable.. Is clearly not the case here.please advise

Sick 6+ yo thread bump lol.

Not everyone is cut out for poker, it's an emotional rollercoaster because the results don't always reflect the effort or skills put in it.
My long time advice to players that run extremely bad (it happens to all of us from time to time) is to maybe stick to tournaments until the storm passes, and it will, as they say, it doesn't rain every day.

Why exclusively tournaments you ask?
1. It's cheap and you only lose the buy-in when shiat hits the fan.
2. When you eventually get on a heater (and you will) you get a chance of winning some good money for small entre fee.

Other then that, try to win pots without showdowns, as in, bet your hands correctly and don't give them the odds to draw on you, be satisfied with smaller pots it all adds up.
Go to showdowns only with absolute monsters and near nuts as minimum.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply I have tried like you said not letting them get there this honestly doesn't work for me I could give an example but I really don't want to get into analysing individual hands and as for the tournament aspect it's a good idea however I'm not seeing any change yet but will keep you posted I played a tournament tonight was out like the fifth hand in had kk re raised pre got 3 bet so I 4 bet all in got 2 callers one had Qc9c the other had Ac10c and the flop came all clubs lmao although I wouldn't say that this a bad beat it's getting pretty soul destroying.
