I was thinking about this the other day and it occurred that the separate question of "so you won $1 billion, what next?" could yield some different / more interesting answers.

For example, to this question:
One idea I read somewhere (not sure where now though...) was if you had a serious amount of money (eg: $1B+) and wanted to do something totally "world-changing" with it, you could single-handedly put an end to the current (semi-ridiculous) system of software patents... Basically you would buy up a load of existing software patents for a selection of different tech areas and then stick them all in something akin to the GNU General Public License, whereby any IP built on-top of / using one of these "GNU patents" had to also release the IP under the same license and so on.

If I won that type of money i'd go travelling, see all the diff parts of the world that i'd like to and holiday it up for as long as I pleased. Volunteering to help out some households/communities along the way too.

I always liked the idea of buying a vw hippie van and moving around from place to place while living in it, so i'd probably do that for a while, but ultimately, i'd like to learn how to live sustainably off the land and not have to rely on money. Owning a nice house with a large patch of land to have some animals and grow food to support me and my future family would be ideal, and also a green house to grow high grade weed

So in a way, i'd be using the money to help me get out of the money system.

Buy a tiny farm, put solar-cells on the roof and install a wood-oven, buy stupid old car to get into town. Never have to worry about a ****ing thing ever again. (+19.5 million left)

20 million is not enough money to start giving it away. Lotto winners are unhappy because they blame everyone in their lives when they're broke for stretching them thin. If you enjoy your job, why quit? Poker? only in vegas, no more online. Chase bracelets like a G. I'd set up a fund with 5 million where the interest every year is paid to shelters. My first purchase(s) would be a personal chef and trainer, health is everything. Oh and A bad ass catamaran for my parents to travel and retire.

Thanks for replies everyone, well oddly on sunday night my mate asked me to help him pic up a couch he bought and when we went to go get it we discovered the guy selling it had won lotto! So I asked him what it was like he said it was great but when he bought a local(high profile) footy players house for $1.18mil the local paper put his photo and lotto story in the paper and the next day relatives/friends (he hadn't heard from in 20years) starting contacting him leaving notes to catch up. Because the paper had given the address out he said some ppl started trashing his house as in throwing trash at his house(jealous I guess). The guy said he still plays lotto and from what I gathered appears to be addicted to keno. I can't post attachments yet but I took video of this freakish clowns head(it is massive) he had in one of the rooms in his house he also had life size Elvis sculpture. When we got home we believe(from googling) he was one 12 to share in a $21mil jackpot so guess he won $1.75mil.

I buy pretty much whatever I want/need now... so that wouldn't be changing really. I know it's boring but if you manage your money well large cash injections don't change your life all that much.
