It doesn't fit in SMP and belongs in the psychology forum, if anywhere. It will be moved. Some advice. Stick to single subjects that have a fit for a particular forum.

Either because the cry of "rigged!" is a handy excuse for their failure.

Or, as you say, their belief in rigged-ness then feeds into a pattern of cognitive dissonance. "I know I can't win because this game is rigged against me [a given for them, if they truly believe this], however I will play anyway". Logic goes out of the window at this point.

I'm not sure it's the same as "believing the game is based on luck", as you say - presumably they think it would be a skill based game, just not when a website is rigged against them.

Also - is Ron Atkinson just an example you are giving or is he really taught as a classic case of self-deception in philosophy courses?
