Lumoisty brain training site - thoughts

so if you have ever heard of/tried/use www.lumosity.com regularly, I would like your opinions

the site basically says you can improve your brain capabilities in 5 or so areas ten fold after training for however long, and says its all proven by science yadda yadda, this obviously translates to a stronger meta game in poker and could boost your overall thought process mid grind if it really does help

I used it for 3 days for the trial, the games are actually kinda fun and do put your mind to a little work, its the same feeling as playing chess when im not grinding but without the tilt when you get owned by a chess allstar haha.

The site itself is very clean and works great, the features are pretty good like comparisons and graphs etc but..

whether or not this website can help your abilities as a poker player or even just your every day life, I couldn't tell you, so if you have any opinions than please post up!

p.s. if you're just going to say its retarded and cant possibly help your meta game, without giving any valid reasons, dont post (you probably don't have a good concept of what poker meta game and in game thought processing is anyway)

Re: Lumoisty brain training site - thoughts

I used a similar program some years ago (Kawashima whatever on nintendo DS). It's the same way of thinking.
I have to admit my reading and processing skills improved in a short term basis (in a month or so I really so a difference). I quit playing/doing it because I sold the DS and I was not motivated enough.
I tried Lumosity and I lack motivation/discipline to do it, I'm sure it helps in any way. Not sure about the edge you can have compared to the time spent doing it. I think it's worth it though.

Re: Lumoisty brain training site - thoughts

thanks for the input nyaf,

\i personally have the worst time remembering peoples names literally minutes after meeting someone, (brutal for trying to pick up girls) and other things like misplacing things, even minutes after putting them down and things like that, if it helps with everyday life things at least even if not my mental poker game then i think it would be worth it

Call any girl Sandra, she would like it. But yeah, it's brutal for girls haha.

But definitely try it for at least a month, sure you would see a difference. Read more also and why not try also Yoga, or any physical activity which involves monitoring your body as you actually do things.

Worth a try, but I wouldn't pay for it. Try the free games first for a few weeks to see if your progress flatlines at those.

The following sites are free and are close in terms of what is offered

http://www.brainmetrix.com/

http://cognitivefun.net/

Most independent studies find that this type of training only makes you better in the specific tasks presented in the tests.

Just for fun ¡¥Ö20the "IQ" test at brain metrix

Re: Lumoisty brain training site - thoughts

thanks rockfish, good read at the bottom, very long though lol, and yea I go to the gym regularly and it does definitely make you feel better so no matter what its a good thing,

i think ill give brainmetrix a shot and maybe do a review, wont be concrete evidence supporting brain training or anything but if I find a reason to use it then why not right?

Re: Lumoisty brain training site - thoughts

There were some studies that found double n-back* with progression increased IQ but I don't think the results were reproduced reliably. Still it's fun, ridiculously difficult and my personal experience was that it improved attention.

There's a google group out there who focus on brain training and some people looked at the science critically. I think the consensus is that the evidence is inconclusive but haven't really followed it closely.
