Listening to music while playing poker?

listening to music while playing poker?
Music can affect our emotions and that can be both good and bad, and ofcourse there is a difference between listining to metallica or mozart.

What do you think about this?

Re: Listening to music while playing poker?

I noticed that my biggest losing sessions happened when I was listening to aggressive music. Might be coincidence ofc.

Anyway, I have to listen music while grinding, cant get volume without music.

Re: Listening to music while playing poker?

Whenever I put myself into a tournament, I will just listen to Jazz, swing, ska and easy music to listen to.
Something that makes me feel good, nothing too aggressive.
Anachronic Jazz Band, Parov Stelar, Club des Belugas, Vinyl, Caravan Palace...
I'm fond of Metal but keep it for when I train or have to do tedious things, it gives me energy.

I agree, Metallica is much more different then Mozart.

I prefer listening to Gregorian chants. That music was made to soothe the mind and calm the soul some 1500+ years ago.

I find that there is a lot of modern music that tends to have a paradoxal affect. Since it's largely hit or miss, I tend to avoid modern music while playing ... but sometimes you just have to crank up the Zepplin machine and mix it up.

Depends on the genre, I have found it can be a distraction. Classical Music supposedly helps you think, so try that

Re: Listening to music while playing poker?

A lot of people listen to rap. Anyone who can listen to Lil Jon or Three 6 Mafia while grinding could surely listen to Metallica imo. Anyone who enjoys jam bands would probably enjoy jazz. A lot of how we decide what we listen to just comes down to preference or a desire to feel something specific.

I'll point out that some studies have been done that have shown minds to be more productive while listening to classical music than any other genre tested.

Music is, by design, supposed to spark emotion, set a mood but, its your perception that translates the emotion you feel. My point is that music and the emotion it produces inside you is often directly correlated with your environment and/or events occurring around you. You can draw more conclusions from specific behavior and emotional patterns based on an individual's past experiences, but that's too deep and case-by-case.

If I have AA v KK aipf at the FT of the SM for 1st place chips it probably doesn't matter if I'm listening to Beethoven or Boosie, I'm going to be fist-pumping happy and grooving right along with anything playing. Alternatively, if 37s just called my 3b and sucks out, the last thing I would want to hear is Smashmouth whining about being little girls stuck in 30-year-old men's bodies. Meanwhile, if another guy gets busted that same way, maybe Smashmouth is exactly what he needs to feel better. In fact, if the song isn't completely therapeutic to you when something negative occurs I'm sure you more often than not, turn it off or change the song immediately.

What I've described is the concept of preference, of course, but to notice the change in preference as events occur is what I'm trying to illustrate. In the fast-paced world of online poker, they can change fast.

Re: Listening to music while playing poker?

When I first tried listening to music while playing poker, I found it slightly distracting, though certainly not -EV. After a few tries and changing up genres a few times, I would say now that going into a long session without some music to listen to is almost unthinkable. Definitely +EV for me to have music playing for at least a portion of any long(5+hrs) session.

I like Plo's post. The main thing that I get from this for myself is that the song needs to make you happy.

'perception and attention'
