Learning the English language has ruined my communication skills, why? Learning the English language has ruined my communication skills, why?

Ever since I was 15 I started to really learn how to speak/read/write in english. 90% of all the materials I have read since then (I'm 32 now) are in english. This has lead to some significant effects on me

-My brain has stopped thinking in my native language and switched to thinking in english
-I feel a lot more creative and capable when talking in english as opposed to my native language (portuguese). When I'm talking in english, I feel great, I feel that I'm really adding to a conversation. I look forward to such conversations. In portuguese its the exact opposite, I feel uncreative, I feel that I'm boring the other person and myself.

The issue is that I dont live in a english speaking country (and I dont want to move to one as it would be very difficult due visa policies plus I would be away from my family). The vast majority of my conversations are in portuguese and having my brain think in english over the last 17 years has really hurt my communication skills.

Does anyone know if this phenomena is common? Is there a name for this? What are some of the solutions to this?

How about reading some more in Portugese? Maybe 30-50% would do the trick?

You may have become a bit obsessed with English.

A lot of your hippocampus formation occurs between the ages of 15 and 25. I'm guessing the memories of English are more vivid as a result as are your critical thinking skills in English. Speak more Portuguese and do something in Portuguese that requires deep thinking. The neuro pathways are probably still there. You just need to utilize them more.

The issue is that even if I read more in portuguese, it will still be a fraction of what I do in english because in my job (finance related), all the good literature is in english. I spent a lot of the day reading and typing in english. Ever since I noticed the issue I tried to increase the amount of portuguese I'm exposed to but it doesnt seem to have changed much.

When you say deep thinking, what do you mean exactly? What would be the main activities that would trigger this? Also, am I mostly screwed because I focused so much in english between the ages of 15 and 25? If my hippocampus formation happened mostly with english around me, that means it never really developed for portuguese, right?

No, it's not that it didn't develop earlier with the Portuguese. If that were the case, none of us would have memories or abilities learned as children prior to 15. All it means is your English will likely be a stronger skill and you'll need to relearn some things about Portuguese. But you're not starting at square one.

When I say deep-thinking, I'm thinking of things like reading classical Portuguese books and novels. Perhaps reading textbooks in Portuguese on a variety of subjects. Basically, anything that would require more thinking and processing than reading a newspaper or basic reading level book would. (All of this is my theory on what might help and maybe I'm wrong. But I think it would be beneficial).

It won't be easy. English has become your primary language so you'll definitely have to work on it despite your history of speaking it. But if you're willing to put in the time, it should, eventually, all start clicking again.

Anyone has some researched backed views on this? I cant make a big commitment that will take years based on just a hunch

What are you looking for? A magic pill to help you remember Portuguese? My hunch is based on years of academic study and practice. Although I haven't specifically studied how to relearn a forgotten language, my hunch makes logical sense. It would be similar to immersion for someone new to a language. But hey, now I know not to offer you advice anymore seeing how you're not interested in working for what you want and are ungrateful when given suggestions. Good luck.

Op, obviously you have a predilection for English language.

However, you still live in your home country, speak your native language at home, with friends, etc. It is somehow unique that your are not creative in your native language. I believe you can do both.

It is just about doing both, like playing many poker forms. I speak natively Finnish and Swedish, read most of the books in English, do my oral communications mostly in Finnish, my news and forum writings mostly in Finnish (and English), and as a hobby, I do my thinking on paper in Italian.
