$1 -2 nl

There is this player, I'll call him Vernon. If you ever thought you have seen tight, you really haven't. Not unless you have played on the same table with Vernon.

AA, KK, QQ, AK is $40 to $100 pre. If Vernon is in late position facing a min raise ($5) AQs or AJs occasionally. TT or JJ in the blinds for no raise. Heads up is AA, KK only. This is Vernon's whole game.

Most second time players are able to figure out Vernon's strategy within a short time. Seasoned players constantly berate Vernon about playing overly tight, and tell Vernon about how he should loosen up.

What I find so funny, is you usually have to look over Vernon's mountain of chips to see Vernon to tell him what you think of his play, and how he could play better.

Now there are some good lags that do better if they don't get broke first. And there are less tight players that win, but generally less then Vernon. Occasionally an average player goes on a good run too. Of course Vernon has his days where he takes a beating. But overall, Vernon is a winning player.

Vernon is not exactly quiet at the table, but Vernon is far from the life of the table too. What tools does Vernon have in his arsenal that keep him from going into the bathroom and drowning himself in a commode to escape the numbness of constant folding?

He likes winning money much more then 'learning the game' or showing off his 'skills' to strangers or proving a point to said strangers or to himself (textbook insecurity) and through trial and error he learned what works best at his poker room.

However, he hates losing money to idiots even more then he likes winning money off of said idiots.
That's probably where his motivation comes from, and we all know how big of a motivation you need to play boring ultra tight poker.

It still beats fliping burgers or working in a factory though, and pays way better.

vernon is in the right place because lagtards like me always seem to pile chips in the middle exactly when people like vernon have said AA or KK and we have nothing.

Are you saying he will open these amounts? oR AFTER THERE is a raise and three calls he will pop it to $50 with these hands? Because the former is a little silly and the latter is basic strategy (pot sized raise).

In general in full ring NLHE playing very tight is unexploitable and pretty strong against a typical 1/2 crowd.

Vernon just likes winning and isn't too in love with a certain style of play. He quite simply plays not to lose, rather than to win, which actually means he wins a lot.

I'm definitely not as tight as good old Vernon, but I'm a king rock..

Been consistantly winning in card rooms since 1985 (mostly in deep stack no-max buy in type games) ..I play a defensive style EXCEPT when an obvious opportunity to bluff or call comes my way..Almost all the other players can't stand to play with me..I know the younger players would rather lose than play anything like my style...and 99% of them do lose in the long run..Mostly due to the rake/drop and the small blinds..Thanks kids for playing such a flashy style!
