Re: Does alcohol make you a better player?

For me alcohol makes me a bad player, I am a loose aggressive player but when i start drinking I start being more loose to a spewy level.. and when i lose a big pot, either if its cuz a bad bluff or bad beat i tilt bigtime.. thats why i prefer to stay sober when I play poker, I do order a drink or 2 when i know am quitting soon and also drinking when I am playing with my friends to have fun (home game, etc.) is always fun..

Re: Does alcohol make you a better player?

always seems to multiply steam with me and tear away my powers of self examination that might allow me to regain control. I stopped drinking while playing several months ago, and while it does cause my nerves to get more involved in the game, it has positively effected my play and my emotional state while involved in a game. The desire to drink while playing I think in a lot of cases is due to a fear of one's own potential inability to cope with the swings and critical decisions of the game using only one's own good judgement and calling upon what is perceived to be a lacking constitution, but these tools are sharpened through repeated exposure to challenging play, and using alcohol to compensate for a deficit in either of these areas is using a crutch and just asking for trouble.

IMO, it might improve certain aspects of your game, but hurt many others.

In my humble, uneducated opinion, if it consistently improves your game overall, that might indicate some deeper psychological issues.

Having a few drinks does not negatively impact my play or decrease my focus. What causes me to deviate from optimal play is when I let small annoyances get to me.

Re: Does alcohol make you a better player?

I had a few drinks and I felt more confident while playing.
My best results were when I didn't have a drop of alcohol.
I was kind of a nit and became larger as I got more confident and my game improved.
I want to be a better player without any substance involved other than tea, and food.

Longterm I think your game would fair much better if you worked on the problems you've been having with your game (tilting, playing scared, distraction, tension ect) than using alcohol as a bandaid. You may feel better while playing, and make a few less-bad decisions, but I doubt it's optimal long-term.

Playing a bit looser, aggressive, confidence, it can all help, depending of the person etc.
