Bad Beat/Cooler Threshold? Bad Beat/Cooler Threshold?

Last night I had one of the worst 20 minutes of playing live nl hold'em ever.

After a aggro-donk maniac overbet the pot 4x on the flop, I pushed all in for twice his bet with my overpair TT, and he called with 43cc (which he also called a 8xbb raise pf with also) on a 953r board. He turns a 4 and the river is a meaningless J. Ok, bad beats happen. Wasn't my first one I've taken and won't be my last. That's poker.

About 20 mins later, I flop middle set with 99 and lose an all-in against flopped top set KK. Ok, that's going to happen as well. It's just the variance nature of the game.

The very next hand I get dealt KK on the button and 3-bet aggro-donk maniac's pf raise to iso and make it look like I'm tilting. After aggro-donk calls my 3 bet, flop comes out AA3dd. He checks, I bet half the pot, he pushes all-in for 3 times my bet, I call. Turn is 6d, river q rag. He shows K4dd for the turned flush.

After these 3 hands I just had to leave because I couldn't take the bulls#$% anymore. I think I learned after this session that my bad beat/cooler threshold is 3 big pots per session.

I was wondering if anyone else has a threshold that they have set for dealing with bb/coolers or if what I went through is something that you're able to brush off without getting affected by it too much? I was going to play today but decided that I could use the day off and start again tomorrow.

I have noticed that i can easily take an suckout with AA preflop 100b, and maybe take another coinflip with 100bb. But what really tilts me is losing a 200+bb 80%+. 3 of them and i will tilt half my roll, need to work on it..

I think you answered your own question bro. You found yours. Everyone has theirs. When you feel absolutely disgusted - leave. When you get that feeling that means you won't be able to think straight - your emotions are too high. Hopefully your threshold is pretty high and this should happen seldom - and from your description it's high so that's good. So just leave and come back another time. The game will still be there

Sup 2+2'rs!!!
(Quite possibly first post so a greeting seems standard, Olaff, flanderz,Aces)
+1 Olaffs epic wisdom.

Any perspective on tilt control towards the other side of the spectrum i.e. a god mode/heater threshold? Is emotion an edge ever?(Obv it is while not playing)
Does positive variance/up swinging ever lead to a reduction in EV? Or is that a fairy tale?
I always found that concept interesting?

I'll be honest though olaff I've just graduated from micro's and still think an $8 hand is insane, if I found $8 on the side walk I wouldn't even pick it up, I'd snap instagram and call the police.

EV is the average gain/loss (or, the equity in a pot) you expect to have based upon the information available. It is independent of variance.

"Positive variance" implies that for a certain time period you are receiving better cards than expected by chance. It is independent from EV.

Consequently, the only way I can see how past variance might change the EV of your future hands is if it affects how your opponents are going to play against you--for example, you might have more fold equity [FE] if they are resorting to playing fit-or-fold against your bets.

Thanks so much for the reply Dr, I only really got my head around ranges and frequency tells rather recently, so to finally write up my first EV calc feels pretty bad ass, even if it does take half a week.
Sorry to derail btw.

Bad beats usually go straight to the back of my mind, I tend to work on mental game quite often so bad beats are generally only a minor blip I tend to not let them affect my play if possible
