Re: Anyone ever run this bad?!?!

I've been running this badly for a few weeks now. I realize that complaining or asking for sympathy will not help me; instead I would like to know how I can get around what might be a more subtle form of tilt that may be emerging. This form of tilt is not the over the top Phil Hellmuth style of tilt; it is a form of tilt where my best judgment does not seem to be working quite as well and I no longer see things quite as clearly.

For example, last night someone backdoored (i.e. caught two running cards) to a 6 high straight and raised me on the river when I had made the low end of a straight I didn't want to see with my AJ. Before my down streak started, I would have easily folded and known that he had probably made a higher straight with his J6. Ironically, I actually found it harder to lay down my hand since I had been on the losing end in these situations so many times in the last few weeks.

Successful players probably lose less when they are running badly than less successful players. They may not win at these times, but they weather them without losing a significant portion of the bankroll they had built up during normal times.

Of course, I realize that these streaks of bad luck only exist in the past, but I am concerned that running badly has transformed into playing not as well as I would when I was winning, although not terribly enough to be obvious tilt.

Any advice?

Get a bigger bankroll, most of the stress you experience in poker stems from you having a short roll that cannot handle a run-bad.

Yeah this is true, if you have a big enough roll these beats won't mean as much to you because its just numbers to you, not cash.

Re: Anyone ever run this bad?!?!

1. 2nd hand I sit down I get dealt aces, lady to the right of me raises. I 3 bet, she 4 bet shoves all in, I snap. She shows Kings vs my Aces.

This hand loses 15% of the time.

2. I'm dealt JJ UTG, I raise and shorty comes over the top with a 3 bet all in. I call and he shows 8-8.

Again, 15% of the time.

3. Im dealt KK in the SB. Guy raises, I 3 bet big and he shoves all in. I snap call....he shows me 88. I told the table it's definitely coming, guy in the big blind tells me no way I folded an 8.

Still almost 8% (if the guy really folded an 8, I sometimes lie and say I folded one of the persons outs)

This honestly isn't even that bad. I think almost everyone who is here has dealt with worse if they've played a few years. This is psychology, post this in BBV

Re: Anyone ever run this bad?!?!

Being roughly 20% to lose a hand is FAR from invincibility. You are gambling, and 20% is alot. Remember that. Enough so that losing to a 20%er three times straight is not unusual. Like so many others, you put too much value and emphasis on big pairs. They're only an 82% favorite pre and they lose tons of strength post flop, especially against multiple callers. They also rarely improve past the flop and the smaller ones like KK QQ and JJ can very easily be outdrawn or be crushed from pre. These hands are not the holy grail of poker. They are strong hands and when properly played they have a decent chance to win a big pot pre or a small-medium pot postflop. They are far from invincible though. Made hands postflop and getting in in against fools who have like 5% equity or are drawing dead but can't get away because some of their money is already in is where real money is made in this game and where true bad beats happen. Not standard crap with AA and KK that is often poorly played to begin with.
