20/40 FLH

Hero has TAG image otb.
Villian is a wildcat, co.
Folded to V who raises. V complains and asks H not to 3bet.
H 3bets hole cards.

Spoiler:
H has 77

Blinds fold Flop

QJ6r

V checks and calls saying, "I've got something."

What does V have? I pretty much eliminate a Q, and draws, and I assume he has something but it is very little. The tone was as though to assert a challenge. Is this a weak jack, a six, a monster, or something else?

Not a monster. I would go with a bunch of backdoors with a pair. Whether 77 or JT....he is "telling you" he is going to the river. Can't bluff this guy...you can only value bet.

Yes, well H decided his opponent most likely had a six, though possibly a weak jack, so H

Spoiler:

decided to bet.

I thought this was a good example because it is somewhat common in the limit games. I think with a monster most people wouldn't want you to know anything at all, or they will play a game like, "I have an ace" but it's an ace high flush not a one-pair of aces.

This tell also appears non-verbally, saying "I've got something." by threatening to call and such, more subtle. It rarely is this overt, literally saying, "I've got something." And in verbal speech it's usually a little more cryptic, for example, "I've got a pair." meaning bottom-pair is common. They feel guilty about lying, and want you to feel guilty about potentially bluffing you off their hand. It's almost like a game of truth or dare.

Here's how the action proceeded.

Spoiler:
Turn is a 5, check, bet call. River is a Q. H strongly considers a valuebet, but doesn't want to value-own into a weak jack. Checks back the river.
Spoiler:
V has 22, perhaps H missed a bet

As played, not sure you really missed a bet. Thinking it's a 50/50 with valuetowning yourself. Equal having J or a 6. The "overpairs" 88 and '77' are balanced-ish with 22-55 here (AA-99 cap PF.... with 66 makin' a c/r on the turn)
