I often see even on televised poker that a player will make a bet opponent will fold and he will win the hand. The player who won the hand will than proceed to peek at his cards before throwing them away. Does anyone care to explain what is the reasoning behind this behaviour?
Can't say for others but here's my own experience:
I catch myself subconsciously doing this when I make a huge bluff and get away with it. Kinda like how an ape pounds his chest after winning a flight. In some ways it's like a taunt, but weirdly I never do it when I actually have it.

That's my hunch. Dunno if most do it intentionally. I just sit there thinking: nobody cares if you had it or bluffed - muck your hand.
I think it is done as a goading behavior, whether weak or strong. It's like, "Don't you wish you could see these cards? Well, too bad, I'm gonna muck 'em."
I've definitely seen it done with both hand strengths and haven't seen much of an overall pattern. I wouldn't read too much into it unless you somehow know for sure a player is more likely to be bluffing or value-betting when they've done that.
