Picking up chips to bet, deciding not to and checking behind

This might belong in LLSNL, but I though this hand was more tell dependant.

Villain (MP): MAWG rec player playing around 80/10, on a heater.
Hero (BB): Young dude, tag reg image.

Villain limps, hero has jacks, and isolates, villain calls.

Flop: A53r

Hero checks. Villain instantly looks at chips, picks up a small bunch from the top of his stack, lifts them an inch, puts them back, then taps the table twice.

Turn: 4x

Hero checks. Villain snap pots it.

I don't know how to interpret this tell; would love some advice!

That one is usually "I have something decent, but I would prefer to not have to call a bet".

One important consideration is if villain started looking at his chips and picking them up before the Hero was through with the check.

Usually, when LSNL Villains do it in position while the action is still on the Hero, they are weak and are trying to stop the Hero from betting. That is, a bit bet will usually get the Villain to fold!

Re: Picking up chips to bet, deciding not to and checking behind

1) Yes, typically if a player goes for chips 'when waiting for action' they are weak and are trying to discourage being bet into. Don't try applying this on me since I always am ruffling chips ...

2) When action is on a player who does this I'm leaning towards this player connecting to the board somehow (pair/draw/under-pair) but then changes mind that he may get c/r off his hand.

In this case here I'm leaning towards 2-pair on the Turn more than a straight since he only needs to protect against a flush with a straight but can get outdrawn by a bigger Ace on the River.

Another thing that could be going on is 'buyers remorse' and V is now mad that he didn't bet the Flop and get value from his now improved hand. Yes, it's possible depending on his range for Hero that he's over-valuing 66-TT here but I think we made a mistake by not betting Flop or Turn and need to step aside here. GL

I'm thinking weak A turned 2 pair. He thought about betting on the flop but figured it was -EV if were checking a big hand to check raise him. Two check to him was waving the white flag. Fold and move on!

This is always posturing.

Every. Damn. Time.

Unless I'm the one doing it. Then it's to induce.

sometimes when action is on me, i might pick up some chips to see what villain does. more than a few times, i've seen villain get excited and reach for his own chips, ready to make a call or raise.
